my mate bought a car from a dealer
3 weeks later it had a problem
Dealer said to take it to his mate who would fix it
The dealers mechanic then gave my mate a bill for £1600
And it's escalated fairly quickly from there now and it's been about 6 weeks and the car is still sitting in the garage and my mate is £6k out of pocket

What's the deal?

No idea what the score is . You tell us? What's the garage saying? Whys it still sitting there and hows the bill suddenly over £6000 when the original was £1600....?

 

He paid £6k for the motor
They've given him a bill for £1600
And he's got no car
It's been 6 weeks in total

All traders have to offer a 3 month warranty as standard - its the law

 

It needed new driveshafts both sides and the pulleys and tensioned were all fucked

It's not that the dealers already shafted him on the trade in, asking him cough up an extra £700 when the trade in shat the gearbox 2 weeks after he'd swapped motors so I think he feels there's more money coming

 

HD autos in Northolt but I think that was a warning in itself lol

Got to say that's the first time I have ever heard any one having to pay for repairs to a car they have traded in to a dealer! If your mate is not into face to face confrontation then citizens advice and small claims court is prob his best bet . Might take a while but should get a positive result . Surprised you not had the usual keyboard warriors all over this thread telling you to burn the garage down and kidnap him . Or how they would have been down there with the boys and the baseball bats ha ha . Good luck to your mate anyway I hope he gets his money back .

Yell him people that stupid shouldn't be allowed to drive.

 

Just read up on the Sale of Goods Act - and make sure everything's documented. He's well within his rights to refuse it but he has to go about it in exactly the right way.

 

my brother bought a car from a dealer that had a few problems the dealer was not interested in helping out so he went to trading standards they wrote the dealer a letter he had 30 days to reply but does not have to reply to the letter if he does not want to the trading standards then said nothing else we can do they where total waste of time

 

in the past refusing/handing back as not fit for purpose the car had to have the same fault 3 times within the first year, that was a brand new car from the main dealer though.
is it law for the 3 month warranty? ive been told its a myth and no warranty has to be offered and the car my ex wife just bought only came with a 30 day warranty?

The 3 month thing is only in england and wales

 

the three month thing is relative as well. if you bought a £500 run about and the engine went in two months, then you could say the rest of the vehicle is worth the value and that is the risk. car prices would never drop below traders prices otherwise.

in all seriousness, i'd see a solicitor, simple letter will have them getting it all sorted. get it all down on paper in regards to time scales and any factual information. do not conjecture if not substantiated beyond doubt. easy for a forum to tell someone that they'd do something one way and you should do the same, not all people can handle situations the same way to their advantage.

 

He had a solicitor write up a letter giving them 14 days notice to refund all the money or he will be persuing matters through the small claims court
