Afternoon guys! Well what a nightmare today turned out to be. Booked half day holiday to get the old saph cos 4x4 on the ramp to attack the growing to do list. Thought I'd start with changing the fuel filter as long time overdue (typical mechanics car!) fitted the new genuine ford one with new copper seals and the bugger leaked. Took it all apart again, cleaned up the banjo unions, re fitted with more new seals and leaking again! Tried the old filter back on with old seals and still leaking. It's only a weep at both unions but still leaking all the same. Looks like I may have to get new fuel pipes or buy some fuel banjos I've seen on eBay and replace the plastic pipes with rubber fuel hose. Has anyone come across this problem before? Inputs much appreciated! Thanks

 

I had the exact same problem. It was just weeping out. Tbh i haven't noticed it dripping anymore. Next time i start the cossie up i will have to check it.

Some peeps on here said use the washers with the rubber bit in the middle. I cant remember what there called.

Dowty seals are what you need mate !

There a washer with a rubber/viton bit inside .
I use them on mine . Have a look on eBay .
I get them at work .

 

Cool thanks mate never knew what they were called lol! Just being annoying but does anyone know what size ones I will need? Cars back together now to get me home and can't undo the banjos again as I need to get it back to work to fix the bugger :-( thanks again

 

Can't remember mate either m12 or m14 thread banjos , might be worth a Google lol

 

Just checked on Matt Lewis website, m14 banjo bolts they are, so I'll be on the lookout for some m14 dowty washers. I'll let u know how I get on. Thanks a lot for your help, much appreciated!

 

You do have to do them up really tight to seal,

You could try and heat the copper washers with a burner until they go Cherry red this makes them a bit softer and easier to crush.

 

No the copper ones, if they leak nip them up again and normally you can get them to seal

 

Forget all cooper washers I had the same problem doing merk fuel filters at work. I started using alloy washes after that never had a pro it's the way to go.

 

I pretty much tried all the copper washers in our wurth selection box at work, did them up proper tight, even tightened them nearly hanging off the spanners with the other mechanic at work all to no avail :-( tried alloy sump plug washers and that didn't work. Gotta be the dowty ones next to try methinks

 

I did notice on the original filter the inner washers were slightly smaller than the outer ones to seal on the slight cut out bit on the genuine filter

 

i find the opposite dont tighten them up to much! i always rub the washers on a some sandpaper on a flat surface then heat them up cherry red, allow to cool and then just nip them up

 

Errr, red hot washer + open fuel line =

 

Obviously you hear the washer and let it cool before putting it near the fuel filter. The process is called annealing and makes the copper softer and more likely to seal an not stupid smart arse.

I would say forget the copper washers and use dowty seals. I've always and the same problem and just end up swapping them for dowty.
Nothing wrong with the normal copper ones just prefer IMO

I'm gonna go to screw fix this afternoon for some m14 dowty washers and fit them in the week, I'll let u know how I get on if this doesn't work does anyone or has anyone replaced the plastic pipes with rubber ones before? I see the one from the filter goes to a metal pipe.

 

Well managed to find time to fit the two dowty washers that I had, that side of the fuel filter is now sealed up a treat! Result! Just ordered 2 more off eBay

Yeah prob a good plan. I ordered a couple more off eBay and then my mate who's a bus mechanic says he has shit loads at work and he's gonna pinch me some for next time lol

 

Fair play mate, I think my ideas of using mine as a daily are long gone, got a 18month old nipper now and we just ordered a new car through work so no need to use the Cossie everyday now

I used 2 dowty washers that I had in my toolbox that were actually old Peugeot sump plug washers lol! Only had 2 though so ordered a couple more through eBay and through my mate but yeah fitted them and the leak sealed straight up I'm bloody glad the cars not my daily driver or I would have been royally screwed!
