Default using 1.8 parts with a 2.0 blacktop

hi everyone,
iv got a few questions i hope someone can possibly help me out with.

Im going to purchase a 2.0 blacktop zetec soon, and i was curious about a few things to get it working in a mk5 fiesta.

1. using the 1.8 gearbox, flywheel+clutch, would i use the 1.8 focus starter or the fiesta starter ? ( i know ill have to cut away a section of the sump to get it sitting properly , but that shouldnt be much of a problem. )

2. people tell me to use the 1.8 sump... but isnt the 2.0 blacktop sump where some of its 'extra strength' is ? -could i not just retain the 2.0 sump ?

3. will the standard 1.6 fiesta driveshafts fit the focus 1.8 box ?

and finally, 4. a custom upper mount will be needed, the gearbox mount will fit the 1.8 box, but what would i do about the 3rd/rear mount ? -would that bolt up to the 2.0 or would i need to get that mount custom fabricated aswell ?

Thank you.

1. The gearbox/flywheel/starter need to match. So use the IB5 1.8 starter.

2. 1.8 sump just gives you more space to run the exhaust - bigger cut out tunnel. The 2.0 blacktop sump is actually a much better design and has more baffles.

3. 1.6 ib5 driveshafts will fit in the 1.8 ib5 box just fine.

4. You will need to make a new upper engine mount. The lower transmission mount bolts to the transmission, so should bolt to the new 1.8 IB5 box in a similar place to your old one.

Thanks Matt !

Just noticed everyone who has given me advice is called Matt .... lol

So a 2.0 sump will be fine to use? -and then ill just have to get an extra inch or two welded onto the manifold right ? ( going by another thread iv seen ) and also chop a section off so the starter fits?
And the driveshafts, on the blacktops theres a driveshaft bearing bracket, sorry to sound dumb, but does the bearing go inside the bracket around the driveshaft ? and if so where would i find such a thing ?

Yeah found out the focus 1.8 ib5 box will fit onto the current fiesta mount , and someone on zsoc who is building a zetec turbo ford racing puma may be getting some custom made mounts done soon, so hopefully he does so i can purchase one, they are a work of art !!

Another thing, what inlet would be best to use, the HO inlets are getting pretty expensive now, so a cvh efi inlet maybe ? or would i be better off sticking with the mondeo/focus 1.8/2.0 plastic inlet ?

Yeah the 2.0 sump will work and be better than the 1.8 silvertop sump. I run the silvertop on mine, but if i done it again or could be bothered i would go for the blacktop sump. You may just need to extend the downpipe slightly, or even have it done by an exhaust place to make sure it doesnt sit too low and catch on everything.

You will need to make a small bracket to bolt the driveshaft bearing support to the back of the engine. (And yes the bearing sits inside the bracket). Your driveshafts will already have this type of setup!

Depending on your skill level, just make your own engine mount. Its not too tough.

I use an HO inlet, but you can use various. I lot of people use the standard blacktop ones now, or just use a SO one. I wouldnt bother with the rover inlets. Have seen a few interesting builds using nissan pulsar inlets.... theyre plenum manifolds with ITBs inside.

Are you going the turbo route? Ive got a mk4 fiesta with 300bhp zetec turbo.

Thanks Matt, i did read that the exhaust manifold might need extending a bit, not a big problem..... Iv seen st170 manifolds going for a fair price on eBay, are they good to use and are they any longer in order to clear a front mounted starter ? - not too fussed if not, but would be a 1 job less to do lol.

i thought the bracket was already connected to the engine... I saw some for sale on ebay yesterday but they've all disappeared.
You say the same, will there be a bearing bracket on my current engine, if so could i not use this, or would it not bolt up the engine ?

As for the engine mounts, iv not got a welder and would no doubt not get it right, so im just hoping that the chap on zsoc makes some and i can get myself one. If not i guess i Will have to make my own from card and take it somewhere to get made into metal. as my skill level isnt too high haha

I am planning to turbo the car at some point in the future yeah, but ill be buying a st170 engine to build from once iv got myself a better job.
For now i think ill stick to the plastic blacktop one, as HO inlets are fetching close to Ł100 ! ... and arent as easy to get hold of as the plastic mondeo ones.

Sounds quite mad! you got a thread on here or any pics mate ?

You do have he option of using the 1.3 IB5 gearbox which has a rear mounted starter. No mods needed at all to fit it then. Mount's will bolt right up and drive shafts fit etc. That's from a 1.3 mk4 fiesta.

No thread on mine... but I've just got home from a quick blast and it was wheel spinning both front wheels (quaife LSD) in 3rd at 50mph haha
