Anyone know if there and where I can get low temp stat from, got a standard one in my cabby turbo at the moment but want to change it if possible.

82 degrees is the low temp one? what is the current one?

 

Stock CVHs come with an 88 degree item.

If it were me I would get a Puma 1.7 thermostat from Ford. I have had a couple of issues with some pattern thermostats. The Calorstat brand is fine but they are almost as much as the dealer ones and half of the others seem to be rubbish!

 

Any idea what's the temp on the Puma one mate, 82' ??? I've had a few issues with stat's on mine and friends cars, but they were all QH items.

QH and First Line I will not buy again. It is strange as a QH 'stat years ago in one of my retros was absolutely fine, holding a very stable temperature. It is a shame that the rest were garbage!

Puma 'stat is said to be 82 degrees . When I checked it was less than £13 from Ford.

 

They cant all be crap otherwise they wouldn't be able to sell them but definitely if it is in charge of stopping the head melting I would buy something tried and tested

 

You would be surprised what shit people sell. I could be here for a damned long time saying what I have bought which in all honesty was a waste of money, not to mention the extra time (I have little spare!) and hassle but I shall keep it short and sweet . As long as there are people to buy it (there always will be purely out of principle) they will continue to be sold (I know of people who buy lower arms yearly on cars because they are too tight to buyer genuine items or poly their existing items). In a nutshell here are things that have gone wrong with bits I have bought:

Q-Drive Drop Links: On my 205 all 4 boots had split within 2,000 miles/2 years; an MOT failure
Engine Mount: Same story on the above car (the sleeve fell out after 10k when I came to replace it (the Group N items and genuine items were never that bad IME).
QH Thermostat: My Triumph Spitfire never ever got warm, handy in winter
Alternators: Don't even get me started ; one had my MkIV XR3i stranded in Italy amongst the countless others I have changed on others.
Coolant hoses: My Stag (now almost sold) has had almost all of the 'new' (now 3 year old) coolant hoses changed for silicon items, either due to them fitting crap (and they leaked as a result despite many attempts at fiddling with them) or them cracking and hardening and hence not sealing well at all. I dread to think how much I have spent on coolant (OK, not much) and wasted time in checking the coolant level; The buyer of my car noted how in the Rover circles shit quality bits are rife.

Like most things you get what you pay for IMHO . I guess when I was doing 40k a year I got sick of working on cars besides general servicing.

Hi. With you on the Stag bits. Most of the stuff from the main Triumph suppliers is garbage and just doesn't last. Still... I do love the car though.

 

Why do you want a lower one mate? If your running too hot or having overheating problems you should look into that first, standard stat is fine.

 

I think a few peeps are scared of the fact that the stock thermostat runs at quite a high temperature. OTOH the thermostat I bought for my BMW E36 323i was a 92 degree item (yikes!).

For the record a Puma 1.7 thermostat does fit and it also comes with the seal, whereas with the RST item this shall have to be purchased seperately.

 

That isn't high though mate, the optimum running temperature for thermal efficiency on most engine's is around 90 degrees.

 

True but it is closer to the boiling point of water. And let's be honest. If a hose goes pop at the car being closer to 100 degrees C there is a good chance that the coolant will boil with potentially distastrous results...

OTOH I may have bought one hell of a car which would not stop overheating (thermostat was changed, as was almost every part of the cooling system.
