Any idea what the car is boosting at? How much fuel is in the car? The last one sounds silly, but my car suffers with fuel surge when the fuel level drops below 1/4 of a tank.

That's because you have no swirl pot in your tank chas, what's the lil black plug on the top of your distributor like mbishop?

Without going off topic did they come with them as standard? I ask as some posts seem to suggest that even with a swirl pot the effects of running low will be present.

Yeah they were standard in s2's for sure, not 100% about s1's though, one of my old ones was exactly the same and we discovers it was the wrong tank, was fine after it was replaced

ive found the problem it seems fine if you keep it above 1/4 of tank. maybe sombody put a none injection tank in with out the swirl pot inside. unless sombody knows another reason.

Is yours a Series 1 or 2? It would be interesting to see whether they should have a swirl pot or not .

This sounds plausible, The thing is when you say a quarter tank is there really a quarter tank in there? remember these senders and gauges are over 20 years old and even new they were crap!

My old Escort and Orion both said you had a quarter tank when it reality you had a dribble e.g about £2 worth in the tank, One even ran out of fuel and the gauge was still above the red!

Worth thinking about

I recall that on both of the XR3is I have experienced the fuel pump would start grumbling around 1/4 of a tank depending upon what road you were parked on. One of them had a new fuel pump fitted (for a different reason) with no different a result.

Did they all have the wrong tanks or was there more to the story? You decide .

At the very least brim the tank to eliminate that as a problem before doing anything else as it could be many things.
