Hi I've just bought a series one rst and after the mot it needs setting up as they had to turn the emissions down.

As far as I know the engine is standard inc all internals and was rebuilt 25k ago along with the turbo. It had been set up at 176bhp with print out so I believe it to have a chipped ecu. It also has a pro alloy fmic and magnex exhaust

I would like to fit a cam and run 18psi of boost. Would mfi be able to cope with that and would standard turbo etc be ok?

 

A genuine 176bhp is pretty much all you ill get from a standard turbo mate give or take 10bhp.
Your next move for more power is a stage 2 T3 (.36/50) and hope the MFI can fuel reliably for it, otherwise EFI conversion (not ropey old Ford stuff though).

 

I'm going to get it set up again and use it as it is for now. Then go the zetec turbo route over the winter after reading your guide karlos which management would you recommend?

 

Not wanting to hijack the thread but my car will be running a similar spec/power and after reading a few comments about turning down the mixture to pass the m.o.t . Surely if the car is set up right in the first place it shouldn't be a problem?
Finding a place that can set them up here, let alone charging a mint for it, I don't fancy some muppet screwing up the mixture every time it needs an m.o.t

 

Ah good choice mate! A GEN8 from www.boostmonkeys.co.uk is what I always use, best quality and features in it's price bracket.
You are correct it shouldn't, some people get confused and adjust the idle mixture thinking it adjusts fuelling across the whole 'map' maybe this is what you've heard/read? It would result in very rich idle but still lean everywhere else.

 

Who can map boostmonkey ecu's? I was thinking about fiesta rst efi management, when we converted my bro's fezzy to zetec I spoke to Motorsport developments who said they could supply me with a chip to run 1 bar of boost using the standard Ecu

I wouldn't, I spend a lot of time fault finding/replacing old Ford management for people, the looms, ECU's, etc. are all very old now and often have many problems that are not always easy to find.

 

Mines still running the original bottom end and turbocharger since it came out if the factory, still runs perfect so far.

 

Sorry to butt in and knowing Karlos knows a fair bit but I adjust my mixture and can say it does affect the rpm range. If this weren't the case I would continue being leaner on boost and it's amazing what you can tell by smell,sound,state of plugs. I've done my own adjusting since 2008 and even when at a tuner all they did was make sure enough fuel at base idle,spark/timing and adjust boost accordingly. Then told never to touch the magnet fuel block on the side as this upset the whole running.

I'm just curious and not doubting. More to the point if what I've been doing all these years has been wrong how comes it runs spot on when taken to a tuner. Confused.com

 

I always thought the adjustment altered the whole rpm range. Always used to hear story's about people melting their engines on the way back from mots or shortly after because they'd had the feeling turned down to get through emissions

 

Yeah the way i saw it was if you increase fueling from base idle,this then will in turn provide more than a leaner base idle through rpm. Need some light on the subject
