standard cam replacement
with a high mileage 177k, no performance upgrades just a standard car with s/s exhaust, think the rattling at high revs 4-6krpm is to do with the cam lifters, followers have no idea about cams, what lifters are, what followers are and tappets are so please advise what i should replace this hydraulic cam with.
Not after super performance or anything, just the standard hydraulic alternative.
And can i do it myself?

Hello mate,
Tappets, lifters and followers are all words to describe the same part: the hydraulic component that operates the rocker arm as the cam rotates.
With a car as standard as that I'd stick with a high quality standard replacement.
Changing it yourself depends on how handy you are with a spanner? A basic socket set and a torque wrench are all you need, and it can be done with the engine in the car without too much hassle.

Hello Lee
thank you for replying and clearing some of that up, I'm quite handy with a socket set, and drivers, had interior out and replaced most gaskets myself apart from a head one. Im sure i can attempt it myself, it would bring great satisfaction of doing it myself.
Just which high quality standard replacement do i go with. Ford don't supply the hydraulic cam anymore. Everyone talks about solid cams. I hear all sorts kent, piper, newman but all are for modded engines and fast road spec.

Absolutely, for a mild form of tune, the standard cam with hydraulic tappets are the way to go.
I'd go to your local motor factors, ask them what they have or can get and what the warranties are. Don't forget to buy rocker nuts too if they're not in the kit as they're stretch nuts!
I forget what brand I have in mine but it's a standard cam with hydraulic tappets.

They are all equally risky IME these days, low demand for CVH cams has left them being made by the lowest bidder in the far east... the chocolate quality reflects this.
Even in your engine mate I would still go with a Newman cam kit just so you don't destroy what's left of that moon mile engine!
lol If you then decided to refresh the bottom end at some point (if it starts knocking or smoking) you already have a nice cam up top.
