.

Had that happen on my XR2 turbo, there the same part as on the Escort, Mine was being used as a track car at the time, when I took it apart the bearing was fine and had been on there a few years, I read it's quite common on Mk3 & 4 Escorts and Mk2 Fiesta's that get track use. I just put it down to heat build up. Mine used to get the usual pre track checks and bearing greased and hub nuts re-torqued to correct poundage.

P.S this happened to mine at Fiesta in the Park about 4 or 5 years ago, thought the bearing was gone, the bolt seamed loose so tightened it up and drove it home which was 250 odd miles away in Cardiff and bearing was still in one piece. so can't say it was bearing failure.

Metal fatigue and heat build up will not help
Most drive flanges are 25+ years old

yeah I've heard a few people have had the same problem, I think the lad who dose time attack in the mk3 has had problems, bearing seems fine.
i think i'll have to take a leaf out of your book and start checking and greasing the bearings.

Had it happen on my ERST which has never seen the track, bearing seemed fine. It was only once I removed the flange that it all fell apart.
I was told its just metal fatigue mixed with shoddy UK roads.

I've had this happen to me at least 6 times on my Escort. It's from track use and is always on the passenger side,as most tracks are run clockwise.I've also had the threaded end of the outer CV joint break clean off twice. Now that is scary,as basically the only thing left holding the wheel on is the brake caliper over the disc!!!!!
The bearing's are always ok.At 1st I used to fit a new wheel bearing when replacing the hub,but it never stopped the hub from breaking. So then I didn't bother replacing the bearing.
I actually got so used to it happening that I could notice a different sound coming from the passenger corner,so would come in off track, strip down to the hub to see it was cracked. This saved me the possible danger of a failure on track leading to an accident or a tow in from the recovery truck.
I used to bring a spare hub, wheel bearing and outer CV joint to every trackday as part of my spares kit.Could strip and replace the hub in 30 mins easy I got so used to it.
Ahhh, the good old days, when I could afford to get the car out on track!!!!!!

@ Gus,it 1st happened to me over 15 years ago!!! I even put a post and pictures up on here about this problem years and years ago.No one back then had it happen to them, and that included Tim Butcher,Ollie out of NMS or Christian and Beccy.
I used to just keep replacing them as I broke them, and I never heard or found a cure,as I was the only one who drove a rst on track that was having the problem.I actually thought that maybe my front suspension or something was'nt right,as these guys with 100 bhp more than me never had an issue!!!

If you got 165quid laying about yeah sure go ahead and buy the flange from ford. My splines cracked recently which was on the passenger side. So find it funny this subject coming up now. Would be nice to know if their a cure but doubtful.
