Default Series 1 Rs Turbo ...wheres my reverse ?

Hello,

Been lurking here for years and have nearly finished my s1 rebuild but along with a lot of other little niggles im having an issue with my gear selector...

Original S1 Gearbox but with uprated clutch , new clutch cable . ..selector set back in original place ( pretty sure it is )

Problem : When i try and get reverse ( push down , i assume ..its been sooo long!) the selector actually pops out of the bottom of the rubber 'donut' that holds it into the selector housing.. in short its a nightmare to get reverse ..if im really gentle i can caress it in bit its annoying ..the other gears are better but still a bit clunky. any tips or help would be greatly appreciated!! do i just need to set up the selector again ? is the the quadrant ? ?

Many thanks , Pete

ps i assume all that holds the selector mechanism up into the floor pan is the rubber donut in the brass plate thats bolted to the car?

No sunroof, is the type I would want if I could afford and had room for another.

Ok so ive reset the linkage by loosening the 13mm bolt and pushing the selector on in the box all the way forward into reverse , could not get much of a clockwise turn on it tho .
i then got a buddy to hold the gear stick in 'reverse' and did up the bolt.. its still a bit clunky but its 100% Push Down for reverse .. any comment ? its a C plate s1 escort

ITS NOT 100% PUSH DOWN FOR REVERSE MATE

Its to you and back if you are pushing it down then something is fucked

ok.. any suggestions on whats fucked / how to set it up better ? like i say the shaft on the box goes all the way in when i put a screw driver through it but its only turns a very slight amount in a clockwise direction ( read this in a guide somewhere on here ).. stumped...

I've had two S1's and a S2 (well, mk4 3i) and none were push down.

Right ok

Put in neutral and slacken bolt

Insert screw driver in selector on box and turn it and then in fully slip the linkage on and get some one to put it in reverse and then do bolt up again that is all there is to it

Are you sure you have the correct linkage

ok thankyou for your patience .. ill try that. how far should the shaft turn ? to clarify ..in your method you don't actually push the selector into the box before doing up the bolt (theres another guide on here that says to do it that way) .

sorry to be a pain

..and yes its the original linkage that was on the car when i got it..the only thing thats changed is the clutch / new clutch cable but that shouldnt affect setting it up i believe

You aint a pain mate this is what this forum is for to ask questions and get the help you need

Defo twist then push from memory as you pull the selector in the car it twists the shaft then when you pull it back it pushes the bar in the box
