Soggy carpet in VW Bora...Where are the drainage channels?
I've got a soggy carpet in the passenger footwell of my T reg VW Bora. I'm pretty sure it's the drainage channels that need unblocking but don't know where to locate them. Can anyone help?
If it's anything like my Audi A4, which is probably is as it's a VAG car, the drain holes under the battery will have clogged up.
The water builds up, filling the plenum chamber (where the battery is), and spilling over the bulkhead and going on to fill the footwells. If you're really unlucky (as I was) the unit which control the central locking etc is under the carpet just infront of the passenger seat and will become waterlogged and stop working.
So..
Take the battery out, if there is water you will need to find the rubber plugs and push them through. If there isn't water, do it anyway.
Next lift the carpet and prop it up, sit an electric heater (not too close though), have a window open a few inches as well, and wait a few days/a week.
If the central locking stops working, a new central convenience module costs Ł100+ and then Ł50+ for a VW/Audi specialist to recode it to match your key fobs, etc. When this happened to my Audi I rang the local Audi garage (Newcastle) and they refused any contribution towards repairs, even though a few years ago there was a recall to remove the rubber plugs that cause this. In the end they wanted over Ł700 to fix it, reduced to Ł150 to sort it out myself and using a local specialist to recode the CCM.
Fingers crossed!

As above, drain plugs in plenum chamber and foam seals around pollen filter and ecu housing are common places to go.
It was the seal around the pollen filter housing that went on mine and I ended up with literally a puddle of water in the rear footwell. Unlike Parkus I was lucky and the convenience module was still dry and once I dried out the wiring everything was fine. You wont believe how much water the foam underlay holds!
Use butyl tape or sealant to seal up the leak.

When you open the front doors . In the pilers by were the electrics go through to the doors you will see rubber tits . Squeeze them and you will see the shite come out of them
They are the drains . Had the same problem with my bora and mk4 golf

i had an a4 in at work that had filled the battery chamber with water, it then froze and bust the plastic vacuum pipe on the servo, then when it had defrosted the vacpump sucked all the water into the engine and filled the block up!! fortunatley a simple drain and oil flush couple of gaskets changed sorted it!!
