They are the drains . Had the same problem with my bora and mk4 golf
^^^^^ this, the boras dont have the same bulkhead grommets as the a4/passat they are in the a pillar like a golf
i had an a4 in at work that had filled the battery chamber with water, it then froze and bust the plastic vacuum pipe on the servo, then when it had defrosted the vacpump sucked all the water into the engine and filled the block up!! fortunatley a simple drain and oil flush couple of gaskets changed sorted it!!
