I have read alot of people rave on about the duratec engine, how efficiant is it? how tunable and reliable are they really? im concerned by the lack of real information behind these engines, real experiences and facts.

There's lots of tuning parts in n/a form, but can they be turbo charged? Is it as costly to say get 400bhp out of a 2.0l duratec as getting 400bhp out a 2.0l zetec if its even possible? How would you go about it to begin with after sourcing a 2.0l duratec engine?

i already know about the throttle bodies and im not interested in that set up. I like some info on turbo charging a duratec engine list of vital parts, experiences, companies that could help would be nice too.

No, the Ford/Mazda I4 Duratec comes as 2litre or 2.3 as standard.

If you want tuning info on them, id look towards the USA, as they more common there, esp with regard to bigtime tuning, its mainly them on throttle bodies in gay kitcars in the UK at mo...

 

didn't say std it's a 4 stage made by cosworth 2.3 for the u.s.a market.....

and steve, there is a cosworth kit available to upgrade the 2.3 with, check the US parts calalogue

 

I dont give a fuck if cosworth list it as an option, there are 2.3 I4 Dutatecs as STANDARD

 

i know you can get the 2.3 duratec engines as standard in cars like the american focus and the ranger pick-up trucks but the 2.0l is in the mondeo therefore easier to get hold of a donor car/engine. The reason why i dont want throttle bodies is becuase the trumpets/intake path has to be very long to extract the power. The american sites i seen are very sketchy in details and just seem to brag about themselves. How come if this is such a good affordable engine with so many claims why isnt more people using them?

Basicly Matthew, before Mr Dudley EDITED his post, he said it wasnt a std engine, only a Cosworth conversion, i was saying its a standard engine, which it is, you said Cosworth list a kit, and i dont care, as all i was saying is they do it std, as P.D. said they dont....

Loads of kit car manufacturers offer them. They are used pretty widely from what I can gather. I do know that the bellhousing is different to any previous ford types being 6 bolt instead of 5 so this makes conversions on existing ford models a little bit more of a problem.

Back to planet earth, getting the bell housing to fit isnt a problem there's kits available to fit almost any ford gearbox. I guess nobody here has actually turbo charged a duratech engine yet?

They are both comletely different engines.

Daz ford in there wisdom actually called both units I4

 

I have been told by someone who works in Ford development that they do not share the same code or type names. I have also been led to believe that the I4 that people tag onto Duratec is actually from America and is an abbreviation of "in line 4" where as the I4 engine is actual engine type, not configuration.

The Duratec 4 cylinder isn't even a Ford engine.

 

how comes its not a ford engine then? i would have thought they engineered and manufactered the engines themselves or is it like the 1.7 puma engine co-developed with yamaha?

To clear up any misunderstanding im talking about the 2.0l engine from the lastest mondeo's not the older i4 engines.

 

what about the volvo/ford duratec 2.5 just add to the confustion, yes daz that's what i thougth too....

 

The Duratec V6 is a Ford engine. The Duratec in line 4 is a Mazda engine. Ford own Mazda though so technically it is a Ford engine but Mazda developed it.

 

2.5 4c mate in the new focus

 

Dunno. I didn't know there was a 4 cylinder 2.5 in the new Focus. If anyting I would have thought it was the Duratec 2l. I know the ST Focus is a planned 2.5 Volvo 5 cylinder engine IIRC.

Ford have no 2.5 litre engine listed for the Focus....Only for the Mondeo.
