I will be fitting a new/different engine into the cabbie soon which has a different engine number to the original engine, obveiously

Now i'm going to register the new engine number onto the registration document with the DVLA.

Does this allow me to change the last 5 digits on the VIN plate from the old engine number to the new engine number?

Or does it have to stay the same?

I wanna get new ones made up, but wanna find this out first.

With a Turbo conversion in my Cab, I have registered the engine number change but not altered the VIN/Chassis number (this still reflects the original engine number).

Not saying I'm necessarily right - just didn't think you chould change the VIN number???

 

Agreed, but the last 5 digits are the engine number. So indirectly you have changed it and its not showing the correct details.

 

The VIN number refers to the chassis number that cannot be changed.

The engine number should be recorded with DVLA but don't think this is even on the VIN plate - the engine code on there is usually just two characters to show the type of engine and whether you are allowed to change that is a question I'd like to know about too.

From the DVLA mate...it looks like you can't just change the VIN, the old one is kept unless the vehicle has been sufficiently rebuilt as to warrant re-registration in which case they will issue you with a new number.

I'd just get a new version of your current plate made up fella and make sure you disclose that the engine has been changed if you ever sell it...or if the new engine is ever in

The last five digits of the original Ford engine number match the last five digits of the VIN/chassis number, certainly on normal cars - don't know enough about things like Cosworths where the engine comes from an outside supplier.

The VIN/Chassis number is the one on both the VIN plate and stamped in the floor - these can't be changed. The engine can (obviously be changed, so doesn't appear on the VIN plate.

If the VIN plate doesn't match the number stamped in the floor you have a problem.

 

With my help mate the gearbox will go in upside down and you'll be driving backwards!!

 

As above, DO NOT change the number on your VIN plate/floor/V5

BUT YES advise DVLA of an engine number change....

Though, you will find the engone you are going to fit does not have a number, as It was a brand new unstamped short engine from Ford... Up to you what you do with it, leave blank or stamp with yer own number

Personally I would probably leave it blank that way if plod do get funny, they can straight away see it hasnt been tampered with

 

Good point i'd never even looked at it to be honest, just assumed the engine had the number on thats on the V5

 

I would iagine that was the same as the last 5 of the vin though
