Default Focus 1.6tdci's - are they as bad as people make out?

Evening all

Been looking for a new car for the wife for a little while now, and a Focus 1.6 tdci had popped up locally, 56 plate, 76k on the clock with full history.

Done a lot of research on them and they seem to be the worst of the bunch, with oil sludging, injector leaks and turbo failure problems. Is this the case for all of them, or is it just something that can happen due to poor maintenance? There are a lot of them out there, so not sure weather the problems you hear of are actually rare, it's just the volume of them on the road that makes it seem common.

Thanks in advance

Rich

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will pop along in a sec but IIRC the turbo failure issues are due to a poor oil routing design that inherently causes blockage and starvation. These are the Peugeot engines the 1.6's.

Yes,there crap. Once the turbo go's the whole engine is pretty much scrap. We now turn them away and were a ford dealer. Even if you clean all the filters out they still go again. If its a 110ps they have a dpf on them that needs replacing every 75000 miles and the dpf fluid topping up every 37500 miles. Engines can get very noisey over time from the top end. Just because your going to maintain it doesn't mean the previous owner has. They hate short journeys and will sludge up the oil pretty quick.

Exactly that. There's a very complex TSB to follow if replacing the turbo with a lot of bits needing replacement to stop follow on failures.

They're pretty gutless too.

My sister saw one for sale recently, she's got a new job and travels more miles so her Sport Ka is a bit juicy. I advised her they can be troublesome and slow.

She had to go on a trip for work in her new job, from Lincs to Coventry in her works pool car (Focus 1.6 TDCI)

She thanked me for advising her against one as in her words it was "Gutless and rubbish"

Oh dear that doesn't sound too good, guess I should avoid it then. Shame really as it seems a bit of a bargain.

What are the 1.8 tdci's like then? Or can anyone suggest anything else similar to look for? Went and had a look at a mazda 3 today, thing was awful. Just dunno what else to look at!

Need something that is happy on the motorway, Focus sized, about 2006 onwards, economical, reliable and safe for the little one. Got about £3.5k to spend, £4k tops!

1.8 is a modified version of the old Lynx TDCI engine as per mk1 Focus, these do have the odd injector issues, but other than that pretty reliable from what I see.

Ah, so the same single cam unit that's in my mk4 mondeo then. I can do 50mpg in it when driving normally, so Focus should do a bit better.

If I had to choose I'd have the 1.8 over a 1.6!
