I got £250 for bending an alloy in a pothole.
Few photos of the damage, photos showing the pothole and a strongly worded covering letter with a quote of what your after. If it's less than £250 it's easier to resolve otherwise it has to get approved if it's higher than that.

I think it worth doing just because it kicks them into gear getting the pothole fixed.

My brothers capri hit a really nasty pothole years ago. Sent photo's of the damage and the pothole with a tape measure across and in it. They fixed the pothole within a week and he was compensated within a month.

Think it was recently on watch dog as well.

Picture of the damage at the pothole and a witness statement and thier details will massively help.

Thanks Jaiz
step one, take pictures of the pot hole and the damage
make sure you mark out it's exact location as one side of the street may be one councils and the other someone elses
use a newspaper or such as a guide to how large the hole is
if it is not safe to do so then take it from a distance but try and take it from a higher point of view than your normal person would
call the council
ask to speak to their insurance department
explain the situation
they will then ask you for the pictures etc
if they don't, DO NOT BE FOBBED OFF
make your point that they are in charge of the roads and therefore they are responsible for their upkeep regardless of whatever bullshit they try to spout
in every case i've gone through they will ask for 2 "engineers reports" which means go to a garage and find out the cost of the replacement damaged parts"
send these off and make sure you keep at them every few days
in one case they said that the road had been dug up by a contractor and they would be forwarding their details onto me to chase them up
very easy to do but most people don't chase hard enough
don't claim to have any mechanical knowledge, just tell them that the garage said this that or the other and leave it at that

I thought it was hard to claim these days for damage.

Got told they have clamped down paying out, how I don't know.

don't matter if they've put signs up or inspected the roads of this lark of having to take out a freedom of information thing or anything like that

you simply ask for their insurance department and let them deal with it

got £1850 for my sierra when it broke the bottom of the engine cradle and cracked the sump and bent the steering rack plus 2 tyres in 2000

had another one in the granda a few years later and my last one was a bill of £548 after hitting a pothole and popping the gas canister thing in one of my struts meaning the suspension was fucked, that took all of about 3 weeks to get paid out on but the sierra one took about 7 months
