Default Escort MK3 Zetec Conversion --> 1.1 Laser to 1.8 Zetec Power

Hi everybody and a friendly hello to all Ford enthusiats and fans who know, that it could be so boring to drive a VW

In this thread I will show you my Escort MK3 Zetec Conversion project, low budget but exciting though.

In Germany the Ford scene, especially of the un-loved front wheel driven Escort MK3 is very, very small. The RS Turbo models, sometimes the XR3i, are popular, but even at Ford meetings you can´t find many Escort MK3 models.

To find a Zetec Conversion in a MK3, is nearly impossible in Germany. In UK the MK3 is much more popular than in Germany and I was inspired of many projects in forums like here.

That´s why I started in 2011 a zetec conversion to build one of the rarest MK3 versions in Germany, by the way with a lot more power as before

Then I bought a´84 Escort Laser with 1.1 Kent engine. Together with a good friend of mine, who just needed the whole interior and the original engine for his own Escort. The great advantage was the shell, which was 100% rust free, a top basis for a zetec conversion.

The idea behind this project is to get a fine version of a rust free MK3 Escort. It should look like an RS1600i, but with Zetec Power to get a daily driver and to create my personal 80s time machine. My fascination for the MK3 Escort now lasts for 30 years, in 1983 my uncle bought a new Escort with automatic transmission, the ford virus was born

I hope to complete the conversion this summer, hope you enjoy the pics an the latest news.

Some pics of the car when we picked her:

Looks nice. I do like how older cars seem more spacious. I.e no centre console between the two footwells. Looks really clean too.

Default Engine Swap

Then the next step could be done, the engine swap. Luckily I found in the bay a whole package of a Fiesta S with 1.8 Zetec 105 HP engine (in uk this model was the xr2i). For just 20 pounds I got the engine, transmission, the whole loom with ecu and things like starter, alternator etc.

So it was easy to decide to make this conversion to be done. With the help of two friends I swapped the old lump to the more modern zetec engine.

The old engine cover looked like garbage so I changed it vs. a red powder coated one, that´s really nice as a contrast to the white colour of the car.

After that I combined that with a sport air filter:

Now the engine bay looks good, but will I have fun with the engine wiring? Although it´s not so difficult with my non pats loom, my electric knowledge is limited... I started to cut the engine loom from the whole fiesta-breaker loom and then it looked like a hope to get the lump running.

With the following wiring diagram I connected all wires of the engine loom multi plug:
http://www.quantums.info/pictures/fi...ec_circuit.gif

A first start was successful, the engine ran by the first switch

buuuuut there is one problem I still couldn´t solve. The fuel pump runs only with a bridge, the fuel pump relay doesn´t run.

the relay works, the inertia switch works, but the fuel pump relay gets no signal from the ecu. I know that I have to connect pin 22 of the ecu (brown cable pin 3 on multi plug) to the pump relay on 85, and I did this, but still no signal.

Then the father of my girlfriend tried to help me and connected an addition relay to the xr2 diagram from above. After that, the fuel pump relay runs, but the pump doens´t stop to run when it´s just "ignition on". Normally the pump stops after 1-2 sec but in this case it stops just with "ignition out".

Can anybody here give me an advice? The fault can only found by the "pump-on wire" from the ecu. Which one is it? I connected pin 22, brown cable(pin3 on multi plug) to fuel pump relay 85.

cheers, Pascal
