Default advice on how to remove rear trailing arm bushes

Hi all

I'm changing the rear trailing arm bushes to polly bushes and have a couple of questions

1) what's the easiest way to get the old ones out in my garage (without taking the whole arm off)
2) are they steel lined ie an outer steel shell or am I aiming to just get the rubber middle bit out ?

thanks in advance guys

Cheers
Dave

They are not bushes, they are bearings and a polyurethane bush is entirely wrong for the application.
Why are you changing them? If the originals are dead then GGR make suitable replacements. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.

On the fitting side, remove the arm and pay a garage to press them out, you could put the arm in a vice and whack hell out of it but your more likely to damage something or yourself

I had a bit of play in one of my bushes. All I did was remove the seals in the bush.Cleaned as much of the old grease out as pos and regreased them.

the bushes from ggr are about 90 quid each.

Hello Gents

Thanks for all the replies

Jay your pictures are ace - really helped - especially the 40mm socket ..... I was wandering what size I would need to allow clearance for the bush to slide into too !!!

I appreciate all your comments about not fitting polly bushes, but at 90 quid a shot that just isn't going to happen. I would love to have the best of the best fitted, but I simply cant afford them. I have to watch every penny just to keep the old girl on the road as I just don't have the spare cash. I would love to throw £1000's at it but the base car doesn't warrant it - its not (ahem) shall we say mint !!!!!

I know people some may scoff at that, but I view it as at least i'm doing my bit to try and keep one of the old RS girls on the road rather than break it or scrap it etc

anyway the rubber ones that are in there are so shot, totally loose and the arm is free to move around which is not good ...... the polly bushes will be a 1000 times improvement at the very least, and I know they will be hard, and they may not last , but the car does so such low mileage anyway (its a toy thing) that they will probably last years in there

fraser9764 - you mentioned they are a bearing ?? ...... mine don't look like a bearing at all ? they look like a rubber affair with a steel outer liner ...... Have I missed something here ? ....... are these a bearing affair ???? (in which case I understand why people are saying don't go polly !)

keep the responses coming guys !

Cheers
Dave

do yours look like the ones cozzy jeff posted above?

if so they are a bearing, just with an outer plastic seal.

I drove a 4x4 24v hatchback with the poly bushes instead of the bearing type. Felt sloppy and vague imo.

I'd say ideally you'd want solid beam mounts too, as there is zero horizontal stiffness in the shocks/springs/coilovers. Solid diff mount too if you're brave enough.
