Default Intermitant HID lamp?

I have an aftermarket HID kit fitted to my daily and it's been fine for about 40k miles. yesterday I turned my lights on to be greeted with the bulb out warning on the DIS. Sure enough the n/s light was out. Assuming th ebulb had gone I ordered a new pair . When I got to work I turned them on and it came on as normal. The car was left all day and again on my way home it came on just fine. Left the car overnight and again this morning I was greeted by the bulb out warning. Coming back from my meeting at lunchtime again it came on just fine??

I did notice it seemed a little slow striking up this evening before heading home.

Bulb on its last legs, ballast pack??

I binned mine as I got fed up with them breaking all the time. Got the Halfords extra bright bulbs, and they're almost as good anyway!

These have done almost 30k miles so can't really grumble. Not found any Halogens that seem better than a candle in a jam jar with these lights. Seems shit headlamps on the B5 A4 is a common complaint
