Are you saying it grinds in neutral with the clutch out and disappears when you put the clutch in? Or only when you try to select gears?

You say it only has a few gears. Do you mean you can put the gearstick into the gears and nothing happens, or you just cant get gears at all? Gear stick hardly moves

I just been out there n checked ! When in neutral it grinds an makes horrible noise! When I put clutch down it stops! The stick hardly moves and I cannot find any gears! It doesn't go into gear ! It feels like it clicks into reverse but nothing! I only bought her last night! It was my childhood dream to own a escort turbo 2!

It's possibly the clutch. I wouldn't condemn the gearbox just yet. With the engine OFF try and get the gears. If you can get all the gears then its the clutch. I think your noise will be the release bearing. Does your clutch pedal feel ok? Is it the same height as the brake pedal?

I appreciate your time to answer my questions buddy! With the engine off and the clutch down it feels the same as with the clutch up! It's the same height as the brake pedal! The stick feels like it only selects secound gear but I can move it in a full square motion with or without the clutch down! Almost like there is no guide to slide into gear if that makes sense.

Sounds like the linkage then mate if you can stir the soup with the stick! Get an assistant to move the stick while you have a look at the linkage. I'm not sure what they look like on your car but I know the fiestas and ka's are renowned for the uj seizing up at the gearbox end of the linkage. Hope it is the linkage and not the selector in the box!

I'm just doing a little project at the minute. I'm putting an escort tci engine in to an escort van and then respraying it. Looking at some people's projects on here though I'm getting the bug for a petrol project.
