Default st170 engine stip down. pic heavy

Couldnt find enough info on the st170 engine so thought id put up a tutorial with pics and will update and add info as i find it.
For a start off its alot different from a standard zetec!
videos at bottom.
70odd thousand miles engine.

rear, note brackets for drive shaft and the knock sensor between core plugs and big port holes.

oil take off to go to the oil warmer apparently although could be used as an oil cooler.

note spikes on the cam to trigger the sensor and whoops i broke the cam end, seriously tight bolt! my bad!!

one piece cam cap piece with oil way and sensor, note the tiny holes in the cam shaft!

bigger inlet valves

high comp pistons with valve scoops to clear big valves, plus no wear what so ever to bore which is a sign of a nicely setup engine

vid of how the variable cam works;

the wanky dual mass flywheel

What bolt was so tight that you took a chunk out of the cam ? You should never try to use the timing keys to hold the cam to undo the front pulley bolt.

The vvt solenoid is an actuator not a sensor.

Now I love the way you have got stuck-in but have you priced things like gaskets and stuff to rebuild it ? The costs make them dispossable.

But do carry on as it saves me the bother

The oil cooler is an oil cooler but it also serves to warm the engine oil up faster.

Block, crank, oil pump and sump ect is the same as any blacktop.

Yes the bolt that holds the variable cam pulley on is super tight which meant that with the timing bar in the end it broke it out. There is no way i can get the pulley off at the mo. it twists when you try holding the cam wheel. ill think about how to do it next week. no dramas about the end breaking off. its just a timing slot.

Tried a silvertop 4 branch and the ports are a bit out of line. i cant just pull up the manifold coz it hits the sump. could be overcome quite easily.

Very interesting. Is there a lock to keep the vvti pulley for when you do a timing belt on these are is it just like any other zetec engine that gets timed up with a bar in the back of the cams.

as said really you should never try undoing/re tightening the cam shaft bolts with the timing plate in place

they are not "oil take offs" as they have coolant flowing through them pipes. the unit it self is a heat exchanger as such the faster warming coolant will help get the engine oil up to operating temperature quicker.

but yes well done for getting stuck in

Not sure about this. to be honest i dont have much clue about these lumps at all. its a learning curve to me. how are you supposed to undo the cams? There aint anything to grip on and they are quite brittal so worried about breaking it
