Colin isn't the reg anymore since last year it's now Jason - if it's a valuation done by someone official then your best bet is to join and get Jason or another reg more local to take a look for you.
Failing that my insurance cover didn't require an owners club valuation and rather than going in to the ins and out's heres a thread that was active the other week that will give you a bit of info

Definately worth getting a valuation due to the fluctuation of 3 Door prices, not just saying that as I am the registrar tho.
Wouldnt want something to happen (perish the thought) and not have enough value on the car as some companies would just pay out for a "normal" sierra .
Valuations are done on the "value" to replace the car you have as everyone is different.
Hope that is of some help to you mate
I had mine done so I had some thing in righting from an owners club! But they valued it at 8 grand as they don't really take mods into account so I couldn't use it for insurance as I'd only get 8 grand!
In the end I had to send in pics and all my info /receipts on the car to get a 12 grand insurance value
