Default T5 gearbox discussion

Uprated, do they need it?

Just uprated bearings, gearkits etc what do you have in yours?

Mine runs up to 36psi on a GT30 and the current standard T5 box is absolutely fine and changes up and down lovely but i know they don't last for ever when abused.

I'd be interested in any info regarding straight cut gearkits and are they available through the States cheaper etc as i've been looking.

feel free to add any info

with the uprated straight cut set from the states you need to alter you propshaft as the mainshafts are bigger (thicker) in the mustangs etc and the gear centres are bigger!

The T5 box is pretty good i think you can fit bigger bearings, lay gear support bush and bronze selector pads and you should be ok

I've have mine rebuild and he uprated the bearing and made a few modifications, one was to the reverse gear to make to go in easier? Common problem so I'm told? Anyway 5th is a nightmare to get off, so make sure whoever you take it too has the correct pulley or has made a proper one up or it will just break and they are like gold dust.

Mine was whining it's tits off and all it need was bearings, 5th syncro, seals and some other little bits that I don't know what they are called. The guy john who done mine said its good for 450 - 500 bhp. I paid 240 plus the syncro.

lol!! yeah everyone has a cnc'd 5th gear removal tool for a cossie t5 sat in the workshop! Sorry mate, but that was a bit of a bell end thing to say hence the reason i gave the warning in the first place.

Back to the topic: there are a couple of specialist in the UK here's one. I think there is another in Birmingham.

Gearboxman

Mine was done here by John. He has plenty of t5 broken boxes there for spares and was recommend buy a couple of guys on here.

Hammerton Garage / Solent Gearbox & Axles ask for John

Speak to gears Brammer. He has just rebuilt mine and he has some uprated bits he can do with the gears.

My old box was 7 years old and was In pretty good nick for its age.

Depends what you want it for. No matter how good Andy at Gears or Bara are, they will never get over the fact its a synchro box. For any proper motorsport or regular track work you want a dog box. I use the glebe box which isn't the best but is good value and a big improvement over std. Before the upgrade I would regularly beat the synchros on the std box. For a road car then the std box uprated would be fine.

i had one done by gears that had done about 300 miles since they rebuilt it stripped 3rd gear the first time the car came on boost after i cruised it home to devon from mad.
id had it in the car for a year while i did work on it hence hardly any miles. i didnt expect them to warrent it for that amount of time and doubt they would take my word for it on the miles. not all bad though as it was 500 quid for the box and sold it broken for 300..
i went for the big tooth t5 after and it took a fair bit of use before i sold the car but wouldnt want the noise for regular use if i had the choice again..

What about straight cut gear's, whats the deal with them is it a full set of gear's or a couple. As i don't drive mine all that much i'd be able to put up with the whine

I have the cts big tooth box after braking my standard t5 with stage 3.
Mine had new bearings up rated semi helical gears and stronger forks! Plenty strong enough at are power level mad ade ran the same box with 600 lb ft of torque and never broke it!
With the gears I have they do wine but there not too loud
