Default Mondeo Duratec (petrol) thermostat

So, what does the electronic sensor do on the thermostat? I guess it senses stat position but which is important - open or closed and what bit of kit is it telling and what for? Does it send a signal to the BCM and then onto the HVAC unit?
If this sensor packed up is it detrimental to the running / heating / cooling of the vehicle?

Just curious

i would imagine if it packed up it wouldnt be sending correct info to the brain, would possibly increase fuel consumption, if thermostat still opening cant see it causing an overheating problem.

I agree that if mechanically the thermostat is functioning then its just like any other - what happens when you have a faulty sensor though? How does this manifest itself symptom wise?

symptom wise you probabally would only notice fuel consumption increase, best way is to get a cheap fault code reader that you can plug in and check, Ł20 roughly from hate to say it halfords, i feel dirty now.
