evening Passion BMWers
a mate at work has a e36 328i that he drifts, welded diff and it keeps snapping shafts
i understand welded diff, more stress etc but its his daily hack aswell and is fine 99% of the time.
is there any shafts from say an e46 330d that people use as a conversion for extra beefyness?
any help appreciated
regards Sean.

thats why! its the welded diff thats causing the problem, because when you turn the inside wheel turns less than the outside wheel therefore putting stress on the drivreshafts, its probably scrubbing tyres too. its ok when your drifting because the wheels are spinning but under normal driving coinditiond its no good having a welded diff a lsd is good for everyday driving.
yep your always going to have this problem with welded diffs as said they break when driving normaly off the power ive gone back to lsd on my e36 for that reason.
just put a 318 diff and shafts in a mates 2.8 e36 and they have lasted longer than usual but will eventually let go.
i would go lsd mate.

lads, as i said,
i know a welded diff is no good but i said i would ask the Passion BMW massif
he has had 318/20 and 28 diffs but always broke the 28 shafts
just wondered if it was a weak point?
maby TD shafts or M3 (as suggested
)
Ran, his is honestly fine for months then randomly snaps/breaks the teeth out of the o/s shaft so it just spins in the CV
Cheers

^ Just found a good resource, apparently the non TC models pre-96 'might' have an LSD but there is no hard and fast rule, if you check the diff ID tag and it has an 'S' before the numbers it means it has an LSD.
