Default zetec misfire,engine surge

Hi Guys

I'm hoping to get some insight here
I have a 96 model 1.6i zetec DOHC escort wagon
Some time ago the car developed a slight misfire that just got worse over time.

First thing I did was change the spark plugs, due for a change anyway, the old ones that came out still looked new,no residue or oil, nice clean burn pastern.
Misfire went away for about a day then came back, only slightly and only on low revs, pulls fine from 2500k upwards.
Next changed the Plug leads, got the proper expensive ones for the zetec engines, same story goes away for about a day on so and then it comes back

I have replaced the fuel filter, plugs, plug leads, checked all the vacuum lines for leaks, replaced any dodgy ones (T Piece under Coil pack) ,cleaned throttle body and all censors (MAF air censor)

The problem does not seem to be misfire but more like a engine surge at the moment and only till 2500k revs, after that the car pulls normal, its driving me nutts, going to change the coil pack next and see what it does.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,I would really love to have it sorted.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation, a valve that feeds some of the exhaust gases back into the inlet. They can block up and stick causing rough running.

There designed to make your car better on emmissions.

No, brake pedals are supposed to harden when the car is running, Blanking off the EGR will probably (someone will back me up) cause the EML light to be constantly on.

Symptoms sounded like coil pack and it seems you have now replaced and sorted.

EGR - may not have been fitted in your country in that year (96)? If you don't have EGR then thats a little celebraion in itself lol.
