Default BMW SMG Paddle Shift How does it connect?

Looking to do a Conversion of an E46 M3 s54 engine into my track day car (E36) and want to go SMG II. My father has issues sometimes with changing gear and would help him out. So want to know whats invloved in the paddle shift part, is it electric, and wired that way through the ECU? is its something a stand alone ECU could control? Spoke with Reyland regarding doing the work and asked to do a little more research into it so that the job can be cheaper and easier.

Seems the s54 fits in on the normal mounts but want to sort out the gearbox first before i buy the engine. Other choice was a LS1 engine in it for a bit of V8 grunt!

Yes its all done though ECM's the only mechanical parts are inside the box! Im sure SMG 1 only has one clutch unit where same SMG 2 has more so its like the VAG DSG system

All SMG boxes are robotisised manual gearboxes with standard gearbox arrangement (ie one input shaft). Most are single clutch (E60 M5 is a dual plate) but they are nothing like DSG.

All control for the gearbox is controlled by ECUs (SMG, DME, DSC, CCC, KOMBI as a minimum ) which are networked together (PT_CAN).

I wouldn't say it would be impossible to stick the whole thing into an E36 but it will be hugely complicated as sooo many systems will need to be programmed and coded to ignore missing ECUs etc.

It would be much easier just to use an E46 lol

I meant some of the later ones are clutch as used in the DSG

Already have the car and its setup for track work. Could use the manual but really want to use the SMG. So could I use a the SMG controller and then link it to a stand alone ECU? As its a track car all I require is the engine up an running and nothing else.

Can get a whole engine and gearbox with all the parts. Surely a stand alone ecu can be connected in such a way to controll the SMG? All the TC and ABS etc arent needed so wont need all the control systems.
