hi, just bought a 2002 2.0 TDdi mondeo, after a long smooth drive the over day it decided to lack power and struggle through the power band of the turbo, it was extremely jumpy through acceleration and getting worse until i broke down. after a while of waiting, car fired back up nicely and drove fine for another 5 miles then issue returned, i had it checked and saw my handbrake had seized on so i replaced both rear discs and pads and fixed handbrake, problem persisted. there are no loose turbo pipes, air filter has been checked and ive changed my oil (as advised). seems to run fine after its been stood then seems to have a misfire affect but alot more severe. any diagnosis is appreciated. thanks, matt

 

Any warning/glowplug lights on the dash?

 

Nothing at all, idles mine, just once a get driving it judders then declines very quickly, was told a cloud of bluey Smoke was seen as i broke down.

 

Non at all, idles fine too. Just when driving judders then declines quickly until complete failure. Blue smoke when I broke down.

 

it will have fault codes stored

live data is essential for diagnosis, MAP/MAF readings, fuel pressure prescribed and actual, both rail and high pressure etc

no good guessing mate could cost you thousands

If I was to have a guess, I'd say it's got the symptoms of injector problems - but the other guys right - it could be anything.
Diagnostic check is a good shout - then take it from there

 

It could be a faulty EGR valve, this can be blanked off, best to use a solid (no holes to let gasses through) stainless steel blanking plate, the EGR valve may be on the front left of the engine or the back right

The inlet manifold can get "gunged up" and its worth taking it off and cleaning it out

The blanking plate only costs about Ł5 online and the inlet manifold is easy to take off (10mm bolts) but a messy job

You should change the air filter (pattern - only Ł5/ Ł6) frequently (a bit more often than Ford recommends IMO) (unlikely to be the source of your problems)

The other one is the fuel filter - if you are changing it yourself best to fill it with diesel and connect an extra battery eg - jump leads to another car, because the battery is liable to go flat before you bleed it/ before it starts and watch you don't burn out the starter motor - use "short" bursts

These things are realatively inexpensive and are "service" items any way (cleaning out manifold and fitting blanking plate are "unofficial" service items/ standard practice)

If the above does not work check your lift pump (i presume its a TDDI 115 UK model)

 

just seen its a TDDi,

take the fuel filter off,

empty the contents into a container via a paper filter, any glittery/gold deposits are sure ways to diagnose pump failure,

although i would have Colchester Diesels have a look

EGR or injectors would be a stab in the dark, as suggested.

delivery pressure is critical to the early Di engines
