Default 1978 Mk2 Transit Recovery

Here is my Mk2 transit recovery truck,

1978, 2.4 York and 4 speed, alloy bed and good old hand winch!

Drove it 610 miles home and it was a nitemare, 42 flat out empty, lol!

Plans are to fit a 2.5 Di turbo and 5 speed box, strip the cab down and do all the welding and bodywork that is needed and a nice coat of Sunburst red or yellow and fit the phase 1 front end like it should have on it.

Ive removed the phase 2 stuff and fitted up a phase 1 front panel, and borrowed indicators from oddys van for mock up to see it it all fitted!

i planned to remove the bumper that had been fitted to the front ( think it was a rear bumber with step from an iveco or something ) but it has been seriously welded on so i decided to box in the step and remove the tow bar. will hopefully look like a recovery spec bumper when its finnished and painted.

I have cut the old wing off and have it up on a stand to get better access for the repairs that are needed on the passenger side,

Will get on with the repairs over the next few weeks and see how i get on and will try to update when ive got a decent bit done.

I knew about most of the repairs needed but i came accross rot on the dashboard panel that has came through from the rot on the windscreen pillar which might be a bit of a bitch to sort!

I remember seeing the van on retrorides for sale and drooling over it,what a minter.
I'd be cautious of the di,although bombproof their very gutless, with a car on the back they really struggle, perhaps a turbo one would be ok but for similar economy and much more fun go for the cossie granada lump, their gonna be pretty easy to fit and much more modern.
If staying diesel a nice e300td lump from a 90's merc would be the boy,I'd leave the autobox on too as their super tough as well.
These are the ones that can be tuned to ridiculous power on boggo internals, there's a drift merc estate doing the rounds on this very engine with a silly sized turbo on it!!!
Not saying you'll go huge power but at least you know these motors are super tough at about 180bhp and 300nm torques.
Really looking forward to seeing this finished.
