Default What the hell is this noise? with video HELP (SOLVED! NOW HOW DO I FIX?)

Started doing it yesterday. Sounds like a chugging steam train/panting dog/someone sawing wood.

It does it constantly at tickover speed, an increase or decrease in engine revs doesnt speed the noise up or slow it down. If you drive the car the nosie will intermittently stop and then come back again on and off. Noise stays when clutch pedal is pressed to the floor.

Car drives fine, stops and starts fine, idles fine, no misfires or performance issues, just that really irritating noise that is pretty loud.

I took it to be cleaned last night, got back to take photos and it started doing it.. sods law as i was just about to list it on eBay!

Any ideas? Whats odd is you can hear it more inside the car than from under the bonnet, but under the bonnet it seems to be coming from the inlet manifold area.

If it was pulley or belt noise, I'd expect it to change with the increase of engine speed.

Is the noise coming from inside the car or from the engine bay? My ST170 makes some funny noises but I've learned to ignore them!

Does it change with engine speed ?

And the fact your videoing it inside the car....does this mean you think it is internal to the cabin, or external ?

doesn't sound engine related as the speed doesn't seem to affect it,

look at moving parts not connected to the engine, heater fan maybe?

Did nobody read the text below the video ?

Engine speed increase/decrease doesnt change it. Its definitely coming from the engine, inlet manifold area just for some reason its louder inside the car? Its constant when the car is idling but when driving the noise stops and starts?

I thought maybe something to do with the VVC or inlet runner control or something these have?

Could it also be,
Your radiator fan?
CD Player?
Girlfreinds sex toy?
Fuel pump?

Also, does it do it when the engines hot and cold?
Best thing to do really it have a poke about with a good ear.

Its none of the above, its coming from the right hand side of the inlet manifold as you look at it.

Ill post a engine bay vid in a minute

Did you have the engine cleaned when you got the car cleaned? Might have got water in a bearing perhaps. Might be worth getting some WD40 and giving a few things a blast with it in engine bay and see if it quietns down.

there is a small box like thing on the bulk head just behind the intake and when that breaks you can get thoose sounds, often hear them better from inside the car as the box is bolted to the bulkhead,i would look and feel on that one to start with,i have changed that on about 7 170*s over the years, good luck

Ive found what it is.. lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bSiZDiTgHU

That cable thats going in and out more times than Jimmy Savile at a kids pool party has a plastic lug attached to the end of the cable, this has snapped off the side of the inlet, the noise is the pressure of the engine fluttering the flaps inside the inlet manifold open and shut, open and shut.

So what is it thats broke? Do i need to buy a whole new inlet manifold? Is it safe to drive as it is?

Any bodges available?

You used to be able to buy the end piece with that lug on, it should be still available. Some times however it causes the motor that operates the cable to jam because the cable inside goes slack and folds up inside

You can buy that bit from Ford and they're relatively easy to fit too.
