advice on a sold van
right, can you all consider this from MY point of view and the BUYER point of view...
Right...
Sold my astravan a fair few weeks ago...
its a 1.7 DTI 2001 astravan.. covered over 170k miles..
sold it for £600
the buyer then rang me a week later saying the engine had blown etc... now i felt bad about this, and luckily i still had cover thru AA for breakdown repair of up to £500.... so have gim my details to ring AA and get a claim... he text me to say AA wasnt prepaired to honour this as he had already taken it to a garage...,
i then offered out of the goodness of me to pay HALF towards a new engine for it... (engines go for around £400 and bare in mind i sold van for £600) so that would be £200 i would of given him towards an engine.
now he's text me saying he want me to cellect van and give him a refund or i have to repair at my cost as this is what "fair tradeing" have told him??
now i was fine with giving him £200 not that i think i HAD TO, but this message today has pissed me right off!!
its a second hand VAN
private SALE
170k miles
now i'd had this van for near enough 3 years and it never let me down...
what should i do?? im not the kind of guy to just run away from this but in reality.... i could??
any of your advice apreciated

thanks for your reply... deep down i knew this is what i "COULD" do but im not like that,
£200 towards it repairing is more than enough IMO and as you guys say... i dont even NEED to do that

If you lay out anymore then you may as well have given him the van! Sounds a right piss take but I can see how someone would be pissed off about the engine blowing but not to the point of having the whole thing sorted for sod all. For all you know, he could have been smashing the arse out of the van from the day he picked it up from you.
What's his idea of the engine being 'blown'?

He's just trying his luck, it's the risk you take when buying a 2nd hand car.
Sounds like your offer was more than generous as well, don't budge on it and I guarantee he will accept it eventually.

Yep agree with above, think you have been more than generous in your offer mate.
Tell him to run and jump in my opinion, bet he has been kicking its hole in since he bought it.

tbh you were nice enough to "offer" help .. as he refused i would not even bother replying again... just a sorry mate but no... had it been a few days but weeks.. come on ... lol
ASabove its the chance you take on s/h goods! but with you been so willing to offer a cash "help" he may feel you knew some thing was amiss!at point of sale. should of told him to do one straight away. always get buyers to sign sold as seen slip.
Unless you're a trader he hasn't got a leg to stand on. He's just been unlucky here and he hasn't been reasonable when you've offered to help.
I sold my wife's old car a few years ago and the new owner called me a few days later to say it'd blown up and he was bringing it back and he wanted a refund
I told him this isn't Tesco's!!!! In the end he did accept £200 towards repairing the engine just to get him off my back and I've never heard from him again.

whilst i appreciate you were trying to help him out with £200, but you've shown weakness and now he's trying to play on your good nature
just reply and say its sold as seen, i'm not a garage and this was a private sale.
He will soon realise he isnt getting anything out of you, and i would withdraw your offer of £200. i wouldnt even have the cheek to go back to someone after i've driven it away!!

Where do these cheeky cunts come from?
2nd hand VAN,170k,£600?
Wtf does he expect?its on it's second time round for a timing belt no doubt so he's probably snapped that.
I had this before on a car I sold as cat c,fully highlighted as such but IMO the woman got cold feet after they'd bought it and her son the "mechanic" tough guy thought he'd threaten me down the phone with court, police etc.
Words I told him were,it's passed a government inspection to check its identity, passed a government inspection in the form of an mot,has no faults other than a slightly crap repair (listed and cosmetic only) and was exactly as described.
In the end with his tail between his legs and clearly getting nowhere I offered him a filthy low price to include the tax they'd paid as well and he took it!!!!
Sold it on for my return price and £100 for my hassle to a guy in work who sold it last year after about 10 years trouble free motoring.
Been on the receiving end with my first s1,drove it on a test drive, seemed ok,drove it to the end of the road after buying, turned right and it cut out.
Towed it the 40 miles home where it never really ran right again (metering head) and sold it on 1/2 finished.
My bad as I knew fuck all about fords and how bad they rusted, and this one was as rotten as an mp's expenses form but never once did I try and even contact the seller,it was my mistake for not checking it out end of.
I love this "I'll bring it back to your house for a full refund" shit, good luck, come on my property aggressively and I'll fuck you up and you won't get your money either,I'm always happy to help and like yourself would have offered something towards the repair although you often find this is in vain as these cunts are just trying it on,trying to get something out of it.
You've tried your best, he's fucked you over now tell him to "get to fuck" as we say in Scotland.
Or offer him £100 for the van back if he delivers it too you,my guess is he'll never be seen again.
Not sure if you read the public disputes on eBay but there was a cracker before about a south African guy who bought a £180 Volvo and wanted about £500 back as the head gasket broke on its way home and he'd needed to call the aa out who infamously said "this car should never have been on the road",is that part of the training for the job as EVERYONE of them seems to say it!!!
He'd totally one sided the story and was getting loads of support until the seller came on and cut him down to size as he'd offered the car for spares/repairs only, classic!!!!

Well i dont know what sort of guy he is as to weather or not i would end up with late night visits and vandalism or anything....
Luckily!!! The van was registered in my dads name and in my dads old address as he hadnt got round to swapping it over,
It was also out of tax so wasnt at my house when he collected... So hopefully i am safe on that front... (plus ive got good cctv just incase)
I didnt offer him £200 as weakness or because i knew anything was wrong either
It was simply i felt bad for the guy, i was thinking along the lines of if it was me....
Im completly skint at the min aswell after having a burst to get car done other week and also ready for ford fair.

From: Bonnie Scotland !! Or offshore in Africa!!!!
This is exactly what i would do, he got greedy becasue you were a nice guy, take the offer back and tell him to jog on! He's chancing his luck, cant believe he had the balls to ask for help with it when it was 600 quid and 170k!!!!!
You made a generous offer of £200 towards the repair which under no circumstances were you obliged to. It was a private sale and the "Sale of Goods Act 1984" is still applicable and the goods must be "fit for purpose". It was however a very cheap van with high miles, there isn't a court around that would rule in his favour if it was as described. He inspected it, was happy and purchased it.
I would tell him that you were willing to make a contribution to the repair but following his attitude and seeking legal advice you are now withdrawing your offer.
