Default NatDay = rip off

went up to natday as I was selling my saph to a dude from newcastle, the pricing was simply tourist what a bloody rip off, if it were not for the fact I was meeting him at 11am I would never have gone, paid £18 to get in then another £12 to look round the pits, and then they charged £10 for a pass ride each if any of us wanted it plus food, the show was not busy at all really, my chap turned up on time checked the car over and handed over the bankers draft, and then I left and went down to silverstone for the rest of classic day which was terrific, never going to nd again and no wonder their shows are getting smaller each year as dick turpin must run that club, some of the local group stands were tiny like 2 cars on it

Fetch the prices down and more might show.
I enjoyed the day, the car drove faultlessly.
But it ain't the same show it used to be at donnington.

Think it's also down to Bernie ecclestone ripping Silverstone off so much to hold the gp there, they charge so much to get in.

i would agree that it seems to be getting less and less each year, i thought last year was pretty poor and this year seemed a bit less, needless to say i still enjoyed it got to see some very nice motors on and off the track, also met up with an old mate there

i would agree that £18 plus the other extra fees is very ott, for our national day entry is only £10 which is much more like it.

Ill be back next year though as its pretty local to me and a bit of a day out on a sunday

i spoke to vince when he got to silverstone, theres a 24 hour a day bank number on back of the cheque you call to verify its legit before he handed over keys, besides most would think twice about upsetting him no matter who you are as he is well connected

I thought the club display was busier this year than last - weather was good.
I spoke to dozens of people I don't normally get to meet or catch up with - I'll always love national day.

But at the end of the day if the numbers don't support then its will get smaller *

Gutted i missed ND this year as i was at silverstone classic

£18 to get in isnt bad if you think what places like santa pod etc charge

What other event is held at a place like donno is cheaper ?

You cant win these days , everyone wants a track show but moans at the cost , then when you say it may be a static show they moan and ask for a show at donno , lol

tbh paul i think the rsoc has got tostart thinking about scaleing down its national day i aint been for a few years but the rs scene is starting to shrink as the cars get less and the type of people that own them has changed from 20 something year olds with cash on the hip to now the 30 something and middle age blokes that have families and a women in charge of the money

unless your on track donington its not a nice venue for the punters at all now but at least this year you guys had sunshine to max out numbers, nearly all my freinds were at silverstone last weekend except vince the jammy sod who was at both and they had a fantastic action packed weekend, Doug is spot on however donington is too big a venue for ND nowadays, places like Oulton Park in my opinion are better suited

I do understand you cant please everyone as there will always be critics

I agree that donno is to big now

I dont think the decline in the RS scene is any fault of the RSOC , Its hard financial times IMO and people are just finding it hard to justify a very expensive car sat in the garage only being used 6/7/8 times per year

I think a smaller event with a more Compact feeling will make the show seem bigger and will get people together better

As said , you cant please everyone , but at least we still have a ND to go to
Imagine if we didnt ?

what a sad thought

Honestly stuff buying a car of any of yous on here that are complaining about spending £18 to get in to a car show allday

I'd hate to see how's yous mentained your cars if yous are that tight and yous try say the scots are tight

£18 is nothing nowadays , eg... I spent more on a my dinner the nite before

Think alot of yous are missing the bigger picture

The shows aren't what they used to be everybody knows that , but it's about making a weekend of it going down the nite before getting a drink with friends walk round the show looking at the cars and catching up with people , getting a run out on the track etc that makes them good

Rather than walking round a show for 5 mins and complaining about spending £18 , end of he day IMO national day must have been good for you as you sold your car for 8k at it which IMO is a good day

I enjoy national day, but I've been better free shows this year.
I really think all shows need to look a prices for those on stand, without us they have no show.
If we can get more on stands everyone will be a winner.

you guys not knowing the thread starter it may appear he was tight but I assure you he is not and is one of the most generous honest people I have ever met, he and his brothers own a huge demolition company that employs 100s, their fords are pampered to the point of obsession which makes most of us mere mortals green eyed, his point was ND was expensive for what was on offer

I don't object necessarily to the entry fee, the reason I don't go is it's all 'the same old same old' and that's why I don't go and haven't now for some years. I admit £18 isn't a bargain but it isn't the organisers who set the prices, it's the circuit owners. No point in having a pop at the RSOC.

I have never been, but intended to go this year, plans changed at the last minute.
Sign of the times really, if the scene is in decline then they will obviously have to project attendance numbers at the planning stage and charge per head to cover their costs, no brainer there.
Don't pretend to know the first thing about setting up the shows but if they cut their margins and gave better incentives to traders and clubs/exhibitors then it would atleast have the appearance of being busier, but you still have to get the numbers through the door and that takes money for advertising.
I think it would be better if they either shifted the venue or partnered with another show or marque by what you have all said, but I guess I'd have to see it for my self.

don't think people realise how much money it take's to put on a show like this

and all the unpaid volunteers who orgianse this event months in inadvance

and if it had pissed down numbers would have been down even more and

club could have made a loss

i will be there next year to suport if we don't there wont be a show to go to

I think they need to look at their advertising. I don't know about any magazine ads but the online promotion was scarce to say the least. You definitely had to look for any info. It wasn't exactly well pushed on the RSOC forum. They obviously need to push it to more than the readers of Rallye News to make it busier in future. I will hopefully be there next year though as always enjoy it.

On the subject of the trade stands.....

Years gone by a big trade stand was around £500, this year if you booked early and you were a RSOC member the biggest trade stand (16m) was £176...!!!!! and that included 4 enterance tickets/car passes...

Trouble is (and I admit I do this all the time) people use the likes of eBay etc for parts, I can regularly buy parts cheaper on Ebay than through work (I'm a manager of an after market car parts company so get staff discount which is 9% over cost)... You hear people all the time say "thats cheaper on eBay" this is why the traders are in decline at ND and alike as the cost isn't viable once you take all the costs envolved..

Rough price guide for SCCs trade stand

Stand £176
Rob took 3 vehicles (van, Mk2 RS, Mk3 Zetec S) fuel £150 ish
Wages for his 3 guys £240 ish

So in reality he has to make around £600 profit to break even....

I had a good day, really enjoyed it, but some of the "trade" stands were pure comedy, it's all very well blaming eBay, but utter tat at Ferrari prices was everywhere!!

I will post a pic later, but my favourite "bargin" was a manky unpainted Escort Cossie bonnet, totally bare with no soundproof, vents etc for £500!!!! I mean come on
Oh, and a shagged set of kerbed peeling Escort cos wheels for £450

People had money to spend, but they are not mugs, I saw a lot of traders taking home near enough everything they had taken

Personally I think national day can be huge again IF the RSOC are sensible & lower gate & trade prices, and allow non RSOC members to display their car on the local group stands for a sensible fee on top of the entrance? Go for volume over a few higher priced tickets!

With all Donnys security problems over the years, no one wants to leave their car, rs or otherwise outside....

i suggested this myself and when the topic was raised officially it was rejected so I simply gave up and moved on from the club, its a lot less bother to simply go on a visting car clubs stand like ours now

that say's it all from a trade point of view and when people are counting the pennies they will buy cheaper but on the other hand buying cheap doesnt always save money as theres so many dodgy sales on ebay ! myself i like to buy from sorce that way you get the right thing an if there is any probs it is easy to sort

I have no bad feelings towards middx or any other local group, it was simply those in control at the big table point blank refusal to move with times, history now
So onwards and upwards

My first National day i did was in 2008 infact it was my first show i had ever done. I was shocked at how big it was, come to this year and i still enjoyed myself but it was half the size it was in 2008. The prices for the food and ice cream was a joke as well . But i will still go again next year to as many as i can because i love it.

And based on a thread on the RSOC it would appear even if your car is parked somewhere infield it still gets damaged. One of the guys returned to find that someone had vandalised his MK2 FRS by snapping off one of the bonnet vents
