£2.5-3k Daily?
Just sold my 106 GTI, was hoping or a PX really... but need a new nippy daily now.
Got around £3k to spend, anything under that a bonus! was going to spend a bit more for a EP3 Type R, but going off the idea now, fancy a turbo.
Maybe Celica GT4? how reliable are they overall?
Not a huge fan of Golfs or Seats, but not opposed... Fabia VRS makes a lot of sense but they're still quite strong money.

civic type r all the way!! great fun and cost fook all to run, plus totally reliable, just sold my ctr daily!
Had a GT4 - cost a fortune to run for not that great performance!! Had a mk4 golf gti, hated it, i like the Seat cupras though, those fabia's do nothing for me!

Nissan 200sx (S14) definitely if you're looking for something Coupe-like. More refined as a daily driver than most turbocharged Japs if you keep them near standard. Look subtle too.
If you fancied something bigger then a Legacy makes a great practical daily driver.
But from the sounds of it the 200sx would be more what you're looking for.

Alternatively, there are a few nice options with V6 engines going cheap right now that make more refined daily drivers with plenty of lazy power rather than going down the turbo route.
I should I know, but near standard power how long before you want to throw cash at the Type R?
Would have one all day, but they're quite pricey to run & all have proper high miles unless you're spending a wedge. Always get big insurance quotes on em too
Exactly why I wouldn't have a Golf or Seat though...

S14's that aren't ragged & silly miles you're spending at least £4k? or am I looking in wrong places? would love a S15 but that's 5k minimum.
You mean like an S4?
It was my 3rd 106, had Rallye's before & they just feel too small and rattle-box for a daily now, even though GTI had leathers etc.. I was slipping into modding it to justify keeping it & didn't want to chuck money at an old 106 with the Cossie always wanting something.
Astra I don't like in any guise
... was ideally looking to swap on a 172 or 182 as it goes, keep trying to work out why they're so so cheap though even quite well spec'd, I'd say it's top of the list but a CTR will hold money at least, or I'm hoping lol.
This is what I'd be looking at:

There are lower mileage ones out there for that price, but I wouldn't worry about the mileage on this one, from the ad and photos I'd say it's a very well looked-after car. Only two owners and the engine bay looks very clean. It's also very clean, straight and original by the looks. Looks a lot more appealing than the others with lower mileage.
As for the V6's, yeah S4's represent great value for money, but I'd still be looking at spending a bit more than your budget if I was looking for one of those as parts etc can get pretty expensive.
However, you could pick up a decent ST220 or any number of MG ZT's within budget. The MG may not be an obvious choice, and may not appeal to lots of people, but it's a pretty modern, well-equipped car that's great to drive for next to no money. And it's well screwed togeher compared to the smaller ones as BMW had a big hand in it.
But sounds like you're looking for something a bit smaller and I think that 200sx would be a good buy.

I did a 350 mile round trip to Blackpool in mine and averaged 27mpg with all types of driving and I wasn't much below 80mph on the motorways.
