Box and diffs are up to 400 bhp no prob.
Look for piston slap on cold start and check the clutch is all ok.

I'd not want to take a 5-speed, even from a newer 2.5 WRX (which are meant to be a little stronger) anywhere near 400bhp... because on the 2.5 you'll have almost the same, if not more torque as well.

Guy up here tuned his 2.5 WRX to around 350bhp and c370lb/ft and he shat a few gearboxes before he got bored replacing them and went for a 6-speed conversion, which will take far more power than that, with absolutely no issues at all.

Things to check are, tyres (need good rubber... pikey make = pikey owner IMO, so it's not going to have the correct oil/fuel etc), brakes, clutch, service history (cambelt service can be pricey)... and take a look at the intercooler fins, being a top mount, they are known to bend if subjected to constant high speeds... so if there are quite a few bent fins, then it's likely that the car has seen a lot of high speed use.

I'm not sure what you're used to, or comparing the WRX to, but please don't expect it to be electric if it's a standard WRX... PPP's are a little more lively and all the STi upgrades bolt right on, so 350bhp and 370lb/ft is very easy to achieve and will transform the car.

Cheers,
Grant

Personally I'd avoid the 2.5 engine because they suffer from head gasket failures and cracked ring lands.

5 speed boxes don't really handle much more than 350/350 but some can last with 400 but it's down to how it's driven. The rear suspension can also knock

5 speed boxes and the 2.5 engine dont have a great reputation in the subaru world, and instead of looking for bolt on sti parts, it usually makes more sense in the long run to just buy an sti in the first place, there are 6 speeds running 600bhp reliably

agree with above I went twinscroll widetrack jdm and have no regrets, had uk wrx before and spent far to much money on it and should have bought sti in the first place.

pics

but to answer question 2.5 wrx is good car but if you planning more than a basic remap then start with an sti

As others say, dont waste your money on the WRX, just buy an STI.

ive had both wrx an sti a few years ago, and if id known the bullshit hassle (engine rebuild and dif problems) i was gonna get with the wrx i would of gone straight for the sti, (no problems had it remap and tweeked it a lil) its a better car to play with and less problem areas good luck tomorrow

I changed my mind now I prefer the older shape (blob eye?) so gonna look for one off those in sti form! I think they look better and believe there more power from the start!

Much better plan mate.

They come from factory with 265bhp or 305 with PPP and 6-speed box/diffs, brembos, uprated engine, plus all the visual upgrades... they make far more sense these days now that values have dipped so low.

Cheers,
Grant

Buy a 2.0 Sti.

Avoid the 2.5 models.

When 2.5 is tuned you will end up with serious oil consumption, from cracked piston rings or oval shaped bores.

2.0 Sti is much stronger.

If your going for a classic get a Type R ver 4-6.
If you do go newage get a sti.
Although there are issues with the 2.5's I'd still be tempted by the 2.5.
Upgrade the fuel pump, injectors, turbo, fmic, remap will see it well in the 400's with matching torque.

A 400bhp + impreza is a stupidly quick road car, you can't change gear quick enough.

I miss my old Type R.

Here´s mine
Bug eye STi Prodrive
305 out of the box so worth bearing that in mind
i´ve had mine decated, filter and exhaust and one remap later, 340bhp
Next jump is td05,20g turbo,650 injectors and pump will see me on the good side of 400.

The way these cars performe,i´d say 350bhp is a nice usable and capable car
Good luck in your hunt
Ian
