Searched on here for a decent thread about what is involved and I can't seem to find one, hence me starting this one.
As my usual techy requests go I'd like to hear from someone that has done it or has a clue and not speculating, i can do that myself.

To start, I have a few questions that I need an answer on;

4x4 ABS, how does this work if converted to RWD, do I use the original outer CV's and keep the 4x4 hubs? Also, brake kit won't fit if I change the hubs to 2WD items, and i'll need different wheels as the offset will change, so can I run the 4x4 hubs front and rear?

Sump and starter, if I want to bolt up a T5 box do I need to change the sump, if i change the sump will it clear the crossmember?

Rear shafts and diff, can I run a 4x4 rear diff and shafts with a rwd prop and box?

I've heard of so called pikey 4x4 conversions, doing it on the cheap, I don't have a problem with doing this as long as it's safe and it drives ok. i.e is it possible to remove the inner cv's, shafts, leave the outer cv, disconnect the front prop (leave the front diff in place) and change the box and rear prop and exhaust?

I want to have the car 4WD with a decent box, but RWD'd would be a stop gap to use the car over the summer and possibly take it to croft/long distances and not worry about the box, so I'd be changing it back to 4x4 again, I'd ideally not want to change the rack/x-member, hubs etc etc etc etc all for RWD bits to have to take it all off again.

 

this is the easiest way for you to do it considering you wish to convert it back later
2 wd gearbox, shit plate and 2 wd starter
2wd bell housing clutch fork and thrust bearing
2wd gear leaver
remove the front diff and cross shaft
strip the front drive shafts and refit the outer cv only
2wd front prop
you can leave the rear diff but be gentle
gear box cross member off an auto model
2wd speedo cable
thats the majority of it off the top of my head

 

Is it the same idea doing it to a Escos? I want to convert mines but not go back to 4x4

 

same fro the escort as that is a 4x4 sierra cosworth basically but a bit shorter
so you'll need to sort a prop

Just break the viscous coupling and it only powers the rear wheels. Nah, just kiddin' but this is case with mine; broken VC and I have RWD Cossie now.. Tho I understand that many people wan't RWD as its more cheap and reliable than playing with either standard MT-75 or with expensive gear kits and stuff.

t5 gear box, bell housing, thrust bearing and shit plate
gear box cradle mount
sump and complete oil pump
cross member
starter motor
steering rack
speedo cable
front hubs
front suspension
anti roll bar (very slight difference )
front brakes or make a 13mm spacer (off set wrong)
engine mounts and engine mounts that fasten to block
prop shaft
diff
drive shafts
rear subframe
you can use your 4x4 trailing arms
think thats about it
did mine on a car ramp wouldent advise doing it on the floor, engine can stay in,held mine with a length of 4x4
thats the proper conversion and the best 2wd is loads better

you only need to do what is on my list

 

my car is a 2wd its been converted at some point so wanted it back how it should be thats why iv changed everything also dident like the idea of it been bits of both when converted back to 2wd
cars running around 400bhp so 4x4 diff isent any good when used 2wd so changed the lot so its right and reliable hopefully

Like I said the other day...If you are doing it then do it properly with 2wd bits.
