Default My Turbo is Squeeky

i have a new GT28R thats done about 4k mileage at 18psi i've noticed that there is some oil on my water feed pipes for the turbo. this can only be coming from the braided oil feed i have fitted.

my turbo has recently made a high pitched squeeking noise. i found today that one of my head-manifold gaskets was loose. i tightened it up and now its not blowing.

the squeek was when the turbo went over about 5k rpm and 15psi before hand. now, it kicks in at about 3.5k rpm (which is the point i'm on full boost - 18psi). and the pitch doesn't change through the rev range like it did before, its a constant sound.

i checked the turbo for play in and out. there is a tiny amount of movement. maybe .5mm. i'm obviously not impressed with this as the turbo cost me the best part of £500

the 1st time i started to notice this high pitched squeek/whine was when i was really giving it some beans (5mins worth of flat out 18psi in 4th gear). the manifold and turbo were properly glowing after that. maybe that fucked it?

its boosting fine, etc. i'm thinking that the slight oil leek has maybe starved the BB core of lubrication and its damaged it, thats whats causing the squeek?

if it is fucked, do Garrett repair them?

Tom.

you serious?

the fucker has done less than 5k miles and been on the car for only about 6 months.

it was brand new when i bought it. i got it from a dealer in Canada. i'm suppose i won't get fuck all warrenty with it.

the BB turbos can't be re-built either. so its scrap.

Well Im sure that the noise is coming from the blades making contact somewhere ( if anyone knows for defo just confirm it ) hence the squeal .

If thats the case cant you just get a new wheel fitted ? as Im sure its only the BB core that cant be replaced

The moral of this satory is dont buy BB cored turbos, they not worth it.

BUT the turbo is NOT scrap, you just need a new centre section, that part is scrap.

Ie you need a new CHRA

Sounds like its on the way out mate

And when u was giving it falt out for 5mins etc that shouldnt have done it any damage as thats what they are designed for mate.

Guttes though But as Steve said cant you just get the center bit replaced?

i was under the impression the core is worth about as much as a new turbo, and its not economical to repair them.

i just taken it off. there was one nut missing so it was blowing. maybe that could be the noise?

the play in the shaft is .5mm. the blades look mint. i was expecting the oil feed to be leaking, but its not. i'm not too sure how one of the water feed pipes is caked in oil.

also, there is a tiny bit of oil residue in the IC pipes. the car isn't bruning oil though. is that normal?

forwards/backwards

my old T25 did that and it was proper fucked, half a bearing in the sump, burning loads of oil, etc.

just noticed, the manifold has a long hairline crack in the middle, on the bit that seperates the exhaust gases into 2 banks as they enter the turbo. its exactly in the middle of it, and goes along as far as i can see, must me a couple of inches. could this be the reason for the noise?

could well be, but you still shouldn't have any play front to back

possibly, you get some right funny noises from cracked manifolds, on reno5gtt's it often makes a ticking noise that sounds just like pinking

all 4x4 cosworth have cracks... never seen one without them ..

it sounds like turbo surge.. your engine cant consume the air the turbo is producing for your engine..
did you have it remapped ?

what are you driving ?

driving an S13 with the CA18DET engine. its stage 3 (around 300bhp), running an off the shelf chip that is mapped for a very similar spec to mine.

its been on the chip for a few months with no problems.

one of the nuts on my turbo to manifold gasket was missing, maybe this is causing it?

my turbo shouldn't have any play in it though, bet its that what is fucked.
