Ive just driven back from work a nice casual drive not giving it any shit, went to change down from third to second while slowing down but it wouldnt go in gear. I tried selecting other gears but wouldnt go in eventually it went into 3rd then it selected 1st, Ive got gears again now but its making a whining noise. has anyone got any ideas??

jup whining mostly means bearings. mine started whining very badly a month ago took it apart and the bearing + shaft were just dead and not usable anymore had a find another one
Found one for about 200 euros and just put it on no whining and very smooth shifting
Happy i still found one , in belgium rst parts are pretty rare...

Assuming there is oil in the box and your clutch is disengaging properly then I would also say box...
Find a front starter, cable clutch IB5 from a mk5/6 escort and fit your LSD, job done

How easy is this? And is it worth doing? Do mounts line up?

The gearbox is a direct fit, the driveshafts etc are totally compatible. The reverse switch may not connect up though.

My lsd dropped right in, simple job really you just need to get the 5th gear off

Mate they are very simple.

Remove old gearbox, Replace directly with new one.... simples

The gearbox is also very easy to strip and rebuild, do a google for rs turbo gearbox rebuild. There is a very good guide somewhere on the net

Release bearing is different but should be bought with the new box. Clutch forks work fine too.
