Default BTCC YB engine spec discussion

Before the DJR thread goes any further ofcourse I thought its best to start a thread where the power outputs and engine specs could be discussed.

Firstly I don't personally have a clue what was used but I know a few people on here will be familiar with what the rules stated had to be used, this should give some half sensible comparisons to what has been achieved in more modern years.

This could be a good opportunity for people to post their BTCC pictures and maybe videos.

First question for those in the know.

I hear 2 bar mentioned a lot regarding these engines, was that something they were limited too ?

Some definitely used a Getrag 5 speed, dogleg box. No idea on diff ratios though but I'm sure that wouldn't be too hard to find out.

IIRC some of the later DJR cars used Holinger 6 speed boxes.

You'd be surprised, rod birleys old rs500/touring car spec engine gave just under 530 on pump and just over 540 on race fuel, the compressor wheel is so inneficient at flowing the air at that boost level that race fuel dosnt make as much difference as you'd think

ok Jimbo im not a fan of T4 turbos so you are probably more qualified to comment on compressor wheel, when we ran c16 on my old car it made a good chunk more than 97 but it was on a 35r on a yb,with 106 rear lol

Some engine spec do take really well to race fuel.
We have seen nearly 90bhp gains on race fuel, more due to trying to be safe on pump. But went from 711 to 798bhp on a yb.

The GGR cars ran a CR of 6.8:1
The T4 was polished and ported.
Not too sure on the full engine spec but i can find out as i have a mate with a 500 running a genuine GGR BTCC Engine.

Hollinger 6 speed from memory.

Typically 2 bar boost for racing and more for quali.

Not all GpA turbo's were created equal.

Have heard rumors about equality of RS500 blocks too.

Graham Goode confirmed in an article in cars and car conversions that Eggenberger were supplied by Ford with an even stronger version of the RS500 YBD block, he said you could hardly lift up the bare block when an egmo engine came to him for a rebuild years later.

Romain in Italy had one for sale recently (pic below) and you can clearly see in the photo that the casting around the base of the bores was virtually solid compared to a normal 500 one ( which is just widened and tapers out at the bottom much like a 200 block) when viewed through the water pump hole. I cant find the pic of I have of a normal 500 one but will keep looking

Yeah, I'd heard they were filled in at the bottom, up to the water pump hole, that one is a lot more.
