Why are people so frightened of bus lanes?
Can someone explain this to me?
Being a Londoner it seems we have just as many bus lanes as actual lanes. But they do very helpfully come with great big blue signs saying when they are in operation.
But it seems either people are blind or don't know how to read them.
Perfect example is one not far from me on the A23, the sign says Mon - Fri 4-7pm. Ie that's when you cannot use the bus lane. But even outside this time no sod uses it.
So I happily drive past all the traffic of fools who are queuing up in traffic.
It worrys me that
I) People do not know the highway code or
II) do not pay attention to road signs.

i used them all the time out of hours when i was a courier, was like my own personal lane, most people are like sheep, and will follow the bloke in front, you will very often find that once you go past a few may well follow as you have woken them up, but most with just follow the bloke in front
this always amazes me people dont seem to understand the rules, especially bad in Edinburgh when I am up there no one dares go in the bus lane even though the signs clearly state the times.
I am happy it stays like this as it gives me a nice clear lane to pass them as they drive along in a day dream.

I don't use them hardly ever through fear of getting a fine, even out side the times as its morons that throw out fines. Try and fight it and you would probably stil get screwed over.
I've noticed this since bus lanes first started.
The problem is there are too many time variations, 24hr, 07.30 - 0930, 16.00 - 18.00 etc.
And it doesn't help when the lane changes from part time to fulltime along the same road.
Most people probably can't be bothered to check the sign, check the time and make a move into the lane.
Bus lane cameras have made it even worse for people to make the move.
It's easier just to follow the car in front.

its the same in edinburgh, queues in the outside lane at 7 am but the bus lanes are empty and dont start until 7.30. i fly by on the 40 limit but you always get the knobbers who feel the need to flash lights or blast their horn at you because theyre to stupid to read the sign.if its to hard to understand a clear and precise sign then those people shouldnt be in charge of a car in the first place

It's this.
I get people sat behind me at work refusing to overtake on a straight road but with double white lines, come a blind corner to the left with no double white lines, they risk everyones lives by then overtaking.
PS I drive a very slow moving highway maintenance vehicle.
Historically signage in London is poor and often contradictory. I often find myself ripping holes in their signage. And then there's the threat of a Ł60 fine when you get it wrong.
But yes, both of your points too.
From the perspective of a local authority sign engineer.

People just too scared and don't know how to read signs. Makes you wonder what else they don't know about driving. Additionally, if you're smart, you can use bus lanes even when you're not supposed to as round about where I live, I know which bus lanes have cameras and which don't. There's a MASSIVE stretch on the A10 that it 7am-7pm and has ONE camera right at the end of it that covers about 100 yards or so as people funnel in as the bus lane ends to go into the roundabout trying to catch people that jump in a bit too early. But if there's no bus behind you, you can use it and will not get caught. I happened to use a bus lane in error near where I work that was 4-7pm and never got caught because there's no camera covering it.
