Default Car Towing Laws Info

Ok i have a Ford Scorpio and i want to tow my track car. I have been told that the MAX weight including my own car is 3500kg.
So say my scorpio is 1400kg the trailer is 800kg i would be over weight with anything over 800kg.
Is that right????

You also have to be careful because VOSA take the MTM (Maximum Train Mass). This is taken as the all up weight of the tow vehicle and the maximum plated weight of the trailer. It's not the physical weight of the trailer or what it's carrying. The usual work round is to have the trailer plated to the maximum your train weight can be, even if it is built to carry more. Beyond these limits you need to have a tacho fitted. A mate of mine got done for not having a tacho in his bosses Landrover when he was driving with a trailer. The trailer was barely loaded but the MTM was over the tacho threshold.

The whole towing law and DVLA thing is a joke. Nobody understands it!
What confused me is .. what if you don't know the MAM of the trailer because the trailer is handmade to a very high standard. What exactly are VOSA going to do then when theres no M.A.M for the trailer? Theres too many grey areas!

max tow weight for a scorpio is 1800kg so if your trailer is 800kg you can put 1000kg on it, but its all down to what categorys you have on ya lience.
