depends on the car. They all do the same and bring the coolant and eventually the block and oil upto about 80 Degrees. Some heat interior for you too.

in wear terms, if you do a lot of short or town journeys then it probably makes sense as your engine is mostly warmed up straight away, and the 10p a cycle to heat up probably saves more than that in fuel that would be wasted in the inefficient cold run/warm up period.

obviously you'll get different Wattage (or whatever they are measured in) but how long do you turn it on before using the car? 5/15/25 minutes?

warrens spot on there as usual.

I had a kenlowe pre heater on my discovery it came on everytime you turned the key on and switched off when the thermostat reached 80ish. No idea on price as it was fitted to it when i brought the motor. But, i highly recommend them as there so useful in clearing the screen too in seconds.

how long depends on the one you buy

there are different ones, electric ones and diesel fuelled ones. the diesel ones ideal for vans/off roaders who dont want to be tied to a plug.

for home use the electric ones are fine. They say its about 30-40 mins if you include interior. They have a simple plug you hide in a grill/hole somewhere so no complex wiring each day.

Easy way to use it is to set it up on a timer plug in the house, that way no need to remember in the mornings.

I have a webasto one and its remote control with a fob or by phoning it
When my dreaded alarm goes off i turn it on
about 20 min before i go to work
It also heats the interior
Its good at work as i have to leave the car quite away away so i can phone it,
best thing on the car
