This was my first post when I joined, but looks like I posted in the wrong section, oops.

Anyway,

I know the noise is the clutch bearings now.

I think there may be a leak somewhere, where I am unsure.
Could that right?

Could a leak let air into the system and make the clutch feel soft/spongy like I am experiencing?

normally a high biting point is the sign of a worn clutch, but it may not slip.

the noise you can hear is probably the release bearing, but you wont know for sure until you take the box out - it could be that the relase bearing is weeping, which might explain the pedal feel if air is in the system.

does the clutch pedal ever go to thew floor and wont come back of its own accord? have you noticed any fluid on the floor where you park it?

i've never done a clutch on this car so cannot help any more

 

All the symptoms off a knackered pressure plate! Or iirc the slave cylinder/ release bearing is weeping and contaminated clutch!

 

sound like your clutch pressure plate is no good i'd replace with clutch kit and bearing

No, the pedal always comes back up when released. And I haven't noticed any fluid on the ground either. But about 6 months ago, I noticed a very small amount of fluid underneath, on the n/s of the engine, on a rubber bit which looks sort of like the bendy part of a straw.

So, just to clear things up, I'd need a new clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder? Just those 3 things?

Do you need to drop the engine out to change the clutch?

No need to drop engine mate on Thames and yes you need all three should come as a complete kit but check first as sometimes release bearing is separate!

One last thing, do I need any special tools like a clutch center tool, or anything else? I have pretty much every other basic tool.

No mate just standard tools a clutch alignment tool can help but I have all ways done it by eye.

 

So, finally got round to sorting my car out.
Half the front end of the car is taken apart and it currently sat in the car ready to be refitted after I have replaced the clutch and other parts.
The gearbox was easy enough to remove, not as heavy as i'd expected, I was able to carry it into the shed, out the way, bit awkward but how am I gonna get it back onto the engine after i've done the clutch? Is it quite easy? I'm a little worried I wont be able to do it.
I had my dad on hand to help hold it while I lowered it on the jack, and he should be able to help with refitting, just don't know how its going to go :/

Also, I noticed with my cv joints, if I move them there is a very slight clicking sort of sound, only very slight though. Are these going to be safe enough to use for now? Hopefully will only have the car for another year before being scrapped or whatever.

One last thing, what grade transmission fluid should I use?
(and man it smells bad!)

Sure it's just ep 90 gearbox oil but your larval motirfactors can check.

As for fitting box make sure clutch is centre and then just use your strength, I normally get them on my chest lol but if there's 2 off you it should be easy mate
