Possibly the cables that connects to the nobs are broken?

Does it feel as if there is any resistance when you turn them?

is it knobs or buttons?

www.fordtalk.com will list whats wrong somewhere along the line, but the site became a bit too complicated for me so i couldn't help you with finding out where to start, possibly the wiki link

There are normally issues with the fan motor itself as it sits directly under the pollen filter so it can size up

The Focus suffers from the same issue as well, however the fact the OP says he can feel air shows the motor not to be a problem

I would look at the cables, I should think both of them are broken...

The seal behind this lets water thought silicon grease it and in the motor there a resistor normaly mucks up because of this change it its were the plug connects to the motor job done !

There isn't a problem if you use the seal that Ford provide when you change the filter!

If you don't water gets into the motor and siezes it! The resistor packs are a common failure, again water ingress with the fan can cause this,as you say!
