Same thing happened to me the other day, they allowed max £52, so that's 3/4 of a tank then!

why do they get put under windows
we had all ours put on other walls (rented house on a grant with oil rads in situe)

its much better than under windows
why would you heat the window 1st? i never had understood so figure it was to save space as window walls are already wasted
as ours are they heat the room before the window but my mums has them under windows and its always fookin freezing unless you sit on the window sill to get warm
she has a gas fire at the other end of the room and you can feel the heat come across the roam when thats on

bit of a funny one really, partially due to space, i.e. no book cases infront of windows, so fit a radiator, but also they act as a heat curtain, this reduces heat coming from middle of room and cooling as it meets the windows. same principal in supermarkets etc. as you enter there is a stream of heat that hits you from above the door, basically stops the temperature gradient which pulls the heat from it's source to the coldest part. image the middle of your room being warm, but the ends near windows freezing.
if your mum has problems then radiators and boiler aren't adequate for the job. bigger kit will actually save money.

back on topic, shite isn't it, sadly we are a weak nation and not capable of mounting a strong enough resistance to reduce the cost. even if we did, tax on other things would increase to compensate.
