Hey everyone, i'm new to this and hope someone can help me out???
I have a 4x4 Sapphhire, newly rebuilt, oversized wossner pistons, 5 LAYER COMETIC HG, arp long stud and nut, BD 14 cams, T34 new, Pro Alloy int, Xpower rad, NEW SPAL FANS and MSD FAN SWITCH AND WIRING HARNESS. The car idle temp is ok ish, fans come in and out as they should.............. I am trying to run the car in at the moment but after driving approx 3 miles the temp gauge rises above the N???? Idle temp fine, cruise temp V hot and will boil over if i keep driving. I have had a hose pipe in every hose and all runs fine.... CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP?????? Car was in yesterday at MSD for Siemens 55's, remap, set up, Bosch 044, wasted spark and still exactly the same problem, PLEASE HELP???!!!

Hi Tony, thanks for your help...... bled at stat housing, i had 3 thermostats before one would fit, took it out today and it ran to what seemed like exactly the same patterN. Spoke withe James at MSD and he has said to bring the car back next week... I have spent a fortune rebuilding this car and would like to find out what it could be. May not be the correct stat, i dont know? People i have spoken with have said it could be a cracked head possibly.... hope not, any advice would be mucch appreciated, many thanks!!!!

car was only run for a very short while without the stat. Can you recommend where i can get a reliable stat from? Car does not over heat at idle and MSD said their diagnostic equip read the engine temp as fine. MSD only covered a few miles, prob in short stints..... Header tank is a forge item and cap seems fine, swirl pot also. MSD said they thought dash was reading high and not to worry, 5 miles later steam billowed fom tank, temp was just in the red......
Could it be simply down to the stat? When driving fans come in and dont manage to cool the temp down.......

Will post a pic tomorrow Tony, it doesnt look like the one in the link though!
I was sure it would be something simple, hope it is. I will order a new stat from Matt Lewis. I am presuming that if it is the wrong stat fitted that is why the car behaved the same way without the stat fitted? Once again, many thanks for your help!

Make sure your fans are turning the correct way.
If they are blowing and not sucking, as soon as they switch on it stops the air from flowing and heats up and won't cool down while travelling.

Feel free to drop it back in phil so i can take a look, it didnt over heat or show signs it was going to when i nursed it up the road to check the criuse fuelling was better than the 11:1 it came in with
i did very little miles in it though as it has only covered 20 miles on a new engine build. so i was keen on making sure the fuelling was suitable for you to complete your run in and shakedown.
the fans were in and out sat in the workshop.

Quick note; the car only overheats when driving.... at idle the temp is fine. From what i have learnt, the 4x4 stat is a very specific type and having the wrong type fitted causes all kinds of weird cooling issues?!
Thanks again James, i will be in touch later this week.

There seems to be a little confusion on this thread as to our role in all this.
The chap came here to get his old chip out as was idling off the scale as usual, new chip, injectors, wasted spark and closed loop fitted along with fuelling etc set up for running in gently as it had a brand new engine in and we were not doing enlisted to be doing any test drives or checking boost etc as it was going to be run in nicely for a few miles under closed loop and the returned to us before it was to see any boost or high revs. The chap who built Phils engine was going to oversee its first few miles and shakedown as part of the build job, so driving it was not a part of our remit that day.
It did NOT overheat in the workshop at any times and the datalogs show it to never see in excess of 90 degrees, with fans cycling properly as expected.
We do stock the stats etc and would have sold him them gladly had he wanted them when he later realised the cooling system had problems after subjecting it to the thermal loads of driving a new, tight engine in traffic. However, thankfully Matt sorted him so all is well.
Why would anyone want to fit an 88deg stat to one anyway?

I am the chap who brought the car in and i did inform James of overheating issues. In MSD'S defence the vehicle ONLY OVERHEATED ON A RUN OF 2/3 MILES or thereabouts. The car did not overheat when idling and MSD would not have known that the wrong type of stat was fitted.
The only people i can point blame to is a local motor factors, whom i will not name...... even to this day they disagree with me over which stat they sell for the 4x4!!!

I am VERY HAPPY
with the service from MSD, just one 'niggly' to rectify at the moment is the the car will not idle properly since the wasted spark, chip, injectors etc were fitted. James thinks it may be the idle speed control valve, I have got a new iscv and will be fitting it tomorrow 18/10/2011. James has told me how to re set the idle or has offered to do this for me.
Hopefully all will be fine as of tomorrow and i can stretch the old girls legs a little!

I WILL DEFINATELY BE USING MSD AGAIN

Oh, and the cars takes ages to fire since the works, worse first thing in the morning......... hopefully iscv will sort this as well???
Will post the results tomorrow......

The ISCV is inoperative mate, it doesn't work at all, you have no idle up at all at the moment.
if this doesn't help your cold start issue then pop her back in, and i will play around with the cold start mapping and crank decay.
You need to get the advisory bits done aswell to keep her in working order mate.

Will fit the ISCV tomorrow, do you have any free time tomorrow? The car is very near MSD at the moment and would be easier to leave you with the car to tweak.... Engine loom next on my shopping list!
