hi all i am a new 4x4 saff owner and the past week a real grinding dry noise has been coming from engine , ive pin pointed the noise to the front of engine area as to the right of the alternator and up by the top cam pulleys , after reading a few post on here i think it coulld be the water pump bearings , is there anyway i can diagnose this for sure , and is the water pump a hard job to do (replace) ??

one way is pop off the alternator belts, and quickly run the engine. if the noise is gone, it may well be the pump. you can give it a spin by hand then, too

pump itself isn't hard to do

 

Just check all the holes if you fit a new gen Ford pump... one of mine wasn't drilled through so no flow whatsover... just a thought and hopefully it will save the grief I had

 

What he ^^ said, don't over tension the belts on re assembling though.
