Default Stolen and crushed :(

I never thought it would be that easy but my friends car was stolen and then scrapped for the cash . The car being a totally original unmolested mk4 escort with 60k and 3 owners since new in 89. I was one of them owners too.
Ok the idiot who did it has been charged for it (used photo I.D) WTF !!!! and also gave his address .
So essentially anyone can scrap anything they wish with some form of I.D legal or not without any logbook/V5 or any other proof of ownership

what a f**ki*g joke !!!!
rant over

they can only accept vehicles with no log book if it has no engine

if the car is complete with no log book legally they are not allowed to accept them so they should be charged aswell for accepting stolen goods and not going by the law

What the hell has an old Escort getting stolen and scrapped got to do with Murdoch? Is that how he made his fortune

Sad to say, there are an awful lot of scrap merchants who'll take stuff without asking questions. Doesn't appear to be a particularly well regulated industry.

Total bullshit,I scrapped three cars last month, didn't have a book for one of them or even a reg number and the council use this scrappy so it's a totally legit operation.
Just give name and address.

The place over here in N.Ireland you dont need log books or ID, just drive in, get weighed and weighed on the way out.

All they ask is whats the name for the cheque.

Tho the car was on a trailer so it wasnt as if we drove it in and walked out lol

Unfortunately they can take a car without the documents, the scrappy has to then fill out a V860 form which is posted to the DVLA to notify them of the scrappage.
And a COD (Certificate of Destruction) has to be issued to the person scrapping the car.

Our scrappy insists on the logbook, and if not we have to take photo ID which they take a copy of.

This is my way of thinking too !
After reading some of the comments you can definately say the whole industry a fooking piss take.
But the guy who gave his own I.D just shows what people are capable of ... As said most likely receive a slap on the wrists and a small fine. Its just totally unacceptable the sad thing is NOTHING will bring the old girl back !!!!

Now..... where,s that address hmmm

Mike

As with pawn shops etc ( Watched Pawn Stars ), Scrap metal places should be required to hold all cars and metal etc for 30 days before they can do anything with it. And they should also get proper photo ID, and take photos of the person selling the stuff, make payments via cheque to account only holders, and take full details of the delivery vehicle.

Failure to do so and they should lose any permission to handle scrap metal or be in business.

But, that would be too sensible.

You need a logbook down here, but easy way round that as long as there are no plates on the car.

Years back my mates escort broke down after a late shift at work. He locked it up and got a cab. Came back the next day to find it gone!!

Few days later we went to the scrappy and there it sat on the top of a load of others cars. The bloke at the scrappy looked very sheepish when we asked why my mates car was in his scrap yard and why did he take a car in that was stolen.
