Lightbulb CAD models out of real parts

Hello everybody,

I am a student in mechanical engineering and going to graduate (hopefully) next year. I am using a CAD software called CATIA V5 from DASSAULT SYSTEMES since 2 years and have done already few projects for my school, and for me personally.

I want to offer my services to make 3D models out of real parts that may need a reproduction.

I know for example that MK MOTORSPORT does repro of 909 parts. I do not intend to do this, but just to make 3D models. It is then easy to use a software such as MASTERCAM and have the parts made by CN machines. What you will get is the CATpart file and depending on the part and the time I have some 2D technical drawings.

Of course I would not ask for any money for this, I just want to gain experience, share my abilities to work with CAD and help people. What you would have to do is to send the part, and give some money for the shipping of the part back to you.

I live in Switzerland so depending on the part it may cost some quids but as I'm working for free, I think you'll get back what you pay for in the shipment. Nothing forces you to trust in me, but I've had some sales and buying experience there with some pf members and I think everything went fine every time and I've personally meet few of them as well and I don't think someone can say I'm some kind of bad person.

So that's it, I'll let this thread here, feel free to contact me there or by PM if you are interested by my services.

Cheers !

Nice offer

Good luck with the learning, that should help a lot for your future in the automotive industry.

Here is just a project I have going for myself :

I did everything except the 2 persons in the car. It is far far from over but I work on it when I have free time so it doesn't go as fast as I want

And did 3 projects for school, but non-car related. So of course I can model everything, but I was thinking about suspension arms, hubs, and things like that. Not cylinder heads but it is of course possible ! I have all needed tools at school to take measurements if I need to.

What methods of inspection do you have to hand??

Or would you use 3D scanning to generate your point cloud/surface??

We have a 2D laser machine for measurements, and the school bought a quite advanced 3D scanning machine which would make the work easier but they haven't received it yet. I will also have a look if they have more hidden machines somewhere (the school has moved so lot of things are still in boxes and I helped during the past 3-4 weeks to open them and install the machines and stuff). But the key word there is "attention to detail" while measuring because as I said the 3D machine is not yet operational and don't know when it'll be !

I can also make 3D models out of 2D drawings which is way easier for me !

I was just curious, as I am in the process of inspecting some Lotus Exige uprights at the minute, and was thinking how much easier it would be to just scan them lol

There is guy at school who just following courses to use the machine because we have a contract with a team to make 3D model of the back of a prototype car for the 24h of LeMans but I heard it wasn't as easy as putting on the computer, putting in the part, and watching it in the CAD software lol. Will keep you updated !

Lol I know its not as easy as that, but trust me, its a hell of a lot easier than trying to inspect every fillet radii by hand.....

Agree mate !! I'll have to do everything manually until I can get my hands on the machine ! In the meantime I've already got to make 3D models out of few parts !

How are you inspecting them? Hand tools, or cmm. I use a portable cmm (FaroArm) to inspect parts all over the uk. You could scan them using a portable cmm with a lazer scanner attachment. You will need to CAD data for this, and scanning can be quite time consuming.
