4x4 cossie
hi guys ive just purchased a k reg cossie what are the first things/ checks i should be doing. is there anything you guys check on a regular basis?also what oil is best to use< the car is pretty much standard apart from a full exhaust system. i may up the power later on but id like to use as is at the moment. where is the best place around /near bristol to get things done. also any alarm reccomendations.
sorry for the long post regards

Hi Paul, i'd say make sure the wiring etc is all good firslty. If you're going to up the power and you buy a chip then get someone who knows what they're doing to set the car up for you, fueling etc, hasn't it got an Alarm then??
Always run mine on v-power. Personally i'd give it a good service and get it booked in for a setup. Always better to be safe than sorry and it should highlight any potential issues.
I would firstly do a service and change the oil, this would be true of any car I brought!
Anyway onto the car itself, firstly you want to check your fans have been rewired, and if not do so.
The fan wiring was substandard when new, leave alone now and it's a surprise if the fans do actually work on the standard wiring, usually the fuse melts in the fusebox.
You can buy looms pre made from MSD etc, or it's easy enough DIY if your good with electrics!
The fuel pump wiring also suffers with age as it builds resistance, thus the pump cannot draw the power it needs and so you can end up with a meltdown!
The above are two chronic weak points!
It depends what it's mapped for really but I just use standard unleaded.
I think "Reyland" may be near you.
Toad alarms are quite well rated (I believe the AI06) is the model in particular, I personally have a Clifford which also get quite good reviews.
Personally I woulden't have anything other than a Cat 1 system!
I assume you do have a current solution otherwise I should think no one would insure you!
Is it standard at the moment? If so thats very rare, but if it is the next logical step would be a stage 1 conversion, this is the easiest conversion, merely requiring a re-map, this will see circa 280HP and importantly more torque!

im pretty sure its standard maybe a little extra power from the exhaust.
the fan works but i did notice in the fue box a wire going from one fuse to another.
how do i tell if the fuel pump wiring is sorted.
oil anf filter is on the cards what oil is reccomended?
although the oil should e ok as it s had a top end rebuild but im gonna do it anyway
power wise im gonna drive it for a bit first may get an induction kit. i have not actually driven the car yet due to having a knee op and been on crutches for the last for weeks anfd for at least 2 more. and its driving me mad

Mobil 1 15W/50 or Fuchs 10W/50, i use the latter, these are both popular choices!
You need to measure the power at the pump WITH the engine under load, i.e. a voltmeter wired to the pump inside the car, whilst giving it a bootful. You should ideally see alternator voltage, but anything less than 12V is the danger point.
The wiring in the fuse box certainly sounds dodgy and I would advocate investigating it!

Apart from all the usefull tips above, i would get under the car and have a good poke about make sure its solid in all the right places, give it a good steam clean etc...
And while under there id change the oil in the diffs and gearbox as you never really know when these were last done...
And flush the coolant and top it up with winter round the corner you can never be to carefull... Best of luck with the car by the way

coolant is a good tip, do you mean steam underneath the car.
I have had issues with the standard fan loom, just ordered a new one. I have changed most of the wiring now. Engine loom with a built in fuel pump loom. It's made all the difference.
Good luck with it, hope it don't give u the grief I have had with mine. Mine is all sorted and they are great cars.

if you need parts for the cossie, go and see Gary @ RS Classics as he is round the corner from you.
As above, service it, possibly even change the belt and tensioner and take it for a set-up - any decent place should be measuring the voltage from the pump so you will soon know if its not drawing enough current.
Fuel pump looms are around 50-60 i think
Ive just ordered a fan loom from Paul @ NYRS and he does two different types - i went for the newer sooper dooper 2 stage fan kit which is £68 plus delivery.
