I will soon be looking for a second hand chipped ecu for my escort, I have seen a few on ebay fetching between £50 and £100, so this seems a lot cheaper than having done at well lane for example, but what is the difference between the different ecu codes, hearts&diamonds or red blue black or whatever? do I have to buy as certain one for my car or will they all be ok so long as its off a s2? Also what is the maximum boost recommended on a fairly standard engine, i.e no uprated internal parts?

Sorry, i should have said, I do have a big grs on the front, but nothing strengthened internally, what i mean is what pressure is safe befor ei risk doing damage to the engine?
you have to buy the correct chip for your ecu.
I would not buy a second hand chip unless i really knew what i was buying and it was backed up by a pro!
£150 will get a brand new chip , why risk it for £50??

swrsturbo go see tony at ART in wakefield. He modified my ecu and did a set up on his rollers for £100. He says it will fuel the engine up to 240 ish bhp.
If ya wanna bell him his number is 01924290431
i've had a go at filling my own bumper with some ready mushed up glass fibre reinforced sticky stuff, sets rock hard just needs finishing with bodyfiller.

I would be glad to put pics up but dont know how to do it yet mate
LOL.
He is right in the centre of town, if you are familiar with mcdonalds/burger king retail park in wakefield just follow the road down to the roundabout, you will see the rover/mg garage on your left. Go sraight on at roundabout into a small set of units, he is on the right.
He doesnt say much but he knows what hes doing and he wont rip you off
oh and yes he has rollers.

Went to ART to enquire about prices, a setup on the rollers is £50, and an unlimited boost ecu is £320
but he was that busy he said he couldn't see me for at least 3 weeks
he had a good few cars in there with the engines out, suppose I'll go back later I've a few other bits to do anyway, like 2 new tyres before i get done!
lol

yeah west yorkshire meet sounds good
£320 sounds a lot for a mfi ecu. when i had my ecu modified by tony for a ton
i thought it was a bit cheap so i took my ecu cover off when i got home to check, and just like he said he had soldered in a small chipboard to interfere with the MAP signal to allow the actuator to add more fuel, i suppoe this is the `chip`.

Got my ECU chipped at Motorsport Developments for £180 ish plus VAT IIRC.
You can only run standard boost without risk of internal engine damadge unless you get it set up to run more boost. Some chips only allow you to run increased boost to about 14psi anyway. Other chips allow unlimited boost.
The fueling is not controlled by the chip at all. This has to be set up and is a manual process.
The actuator controls boost not fuel. Unless you mean the electromagnetic fuel pressure actuator which is controlled by the black box, not the silver ECU. The EMFPA itself cannot flow more fuel unless you set it to.
Blue red blue is a Series 1 ECU
Blue red white is an S2 86 spec ECU
Blue red black is an S2 88 spec ECU
Hearts hash diamonds is a 90 spec ECU.
