Helllpppp unsure whats goin on ???
hi , im new to all this rs stuff and ive always wanted one and just picked up a mk3 rs1600i with a turbo conversion anyway cut to the chase there are a few problems and wondering if anybody could help me out heres a list lol
1st i started getting a really loud tappety noise from the top of the engine and today a poof of blue smoke cum out nd its got really loud and im unsure weather its bottom end or not ???
2nd the person who i borght it of has put mark4 dash in and the fuell gauge doesnt work ?? mk4 clocks mk3 sender ??
3rd it also seems to have oil breathing difficulties and unsure of whats steps to take on this as well
any help is much appretiated
1 more thing is it easy to do a zvh conversion ??? and is it worth doing?

the fact that you appear to have very little mechanical knowledge rules out a zvh conversion straight away!
as for your car, the top end noise will be the worn tappets or camshaft
earth the fuel sender wire to see if the gauge actually works it should read full when earthed

as in what? bearing failure or piston ring/piston failure?
if the bottom end knocks its the bearings
if the car smoked like a chimney its the pistons/ringor turbo/valve stem seals

I dnt have clue what is is basically when driveing in low rev range it sounds like a knocking of a kind but un certain I know I need new clutch and am unsure eather its the release baring on that or the bottom end I meen give me a vr6 nd I no wot I'm doin but with te cvh have no idea I mean breathing nd oil cap popping of stuff never had this b4 thing is I wnt it right and without looking at it I dnt think anybody will no wots up with it I'm just asking for advice on wot the problems may be and thanks for the info the youth you sound like u know wot uyour talking about
blue smoke is burning oil mate which could be a number if things.
rings,valve stem seals,head gasket ,worn turbo seals,etc etc.
without hearing the tapping noise its very difficult to say what the problem is but be aware that the cvh is prone to tapping from worn camshaft and lifters.
as for the breather system,a good starting point is to remove all the breather pipes from the rocker cover and crank case etc and blow through them to ensure they are clear.
then id look at replacing the breather filter if you have one.
and if your looking at a zvh conversion youll need to upgrade your breather system to a aftermarket alloy set up ideally.
probably best you get the car to somebody who knows a bit about these cars before you start spending any cash out though bud

oh,and as for the fuel gauge,if your happy its working after testing by earthing it,then somebody may have attatched the needle in the wrong place.
common problem if it has white dials or something fitted.
you can take the perpex off the clocks,pull the needle off and set it where you need it.

Thanks just one more question if its the bottom end would it be a constant noise. My freinds just done a zvh on his mk1 fessie with r1 carbs and he knows his stuff he sed hell pop round later have listen nd let me know thanks for the info lads once found source of prob ill post it see wot you guys think is best option to go about thing thanks again
right my mate said its defo camshft and lifters and its pinkin whateva that is ?? now after a drive when let of accerator blue smoke fills the street has that narrowed down possibilities

Ya can tell a good rattle if you hold a screwdriver to ya rocker cover whilst running and listening to the other end , Sound like ya got some big issues with your lump
Fuel gauge
There a cunt to put it simple Ive had loads of xr,s with dodgey fuel gauges< as its had a different dash in id suggest it may be something to do with that.
But first off id buy beg borrow or cadge a good voltmeter, Set on ohms measure the resistance on the sender then again after say 10 or more miles, See if it goes down or not , Then check every connection from that sender upwards to your dial
Your smoke...
Take your hose off the turbo, Is there much play? Id assume if theres not aklot of play ur seal may be alreet but not to eliminate
Hows the oil? Does it seem like its never been changed?
Cvh engines are renowned for valve stem oil seals fucking up hence smoke, With your top end sounding like a shopping trolly id also think about taking it apart and replacing the cam , lifters , seals ect ect < whilst at it think about upgrades too as you have it apart...
But id focus on them points

ye oil looked fresh when i got it found out the timming was half tooth out today so sorted that and then the blue smoke really bad now am gna start with the valve seals well the top end and see wot happens is there an easy way to do these and does the original rs1600i cam go straight in and well as the lifters ??? thanks for the help much appretiated thanks reece

hi mate i swaped it for my bmw 320d with the flywheel gone which est bout 1000 plus fitting so i found this ive always wanted one so i had it came with new bonnet boot lid a lean burn head woteva they are ?? and because me mate whos got a mk1 fessie with 2.0 zvh on r1 carbs and hee knows his stuff sed gd shell and all that but when we got it home all sorts wrong
any way to the message earlier i took the boost pipe of the turbo and is full of oil no play int the shaft could that b my problem ??? thanks everyone whos been involved

dude take one step at a time,
a turbo seal is not something you could do yourself unless you had the correct balancing tools.
Either drop the car off to someone reliable (jamsport, nms are not far) pay a wedge and get it done. Or invest in tools, books and do plenty of research

I think I'm gna get it compression tested either 2moz or sat but it only happens when tek foot of throttle I thought if it we're rings I'd be all the time am I right in saying that ? Or is it the other thanks again for replies
